Community Health Care Setting Environmental Analysis
Write a 6 page analysis of your care setting that supports development of a strategic plan and includes both the discovery and dream phases of an appreciative inquiry (AI) project and a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis of the care setting.
Introduction
Identifying analysis techniques for assessing competitive advantage is important for building health care strategy. Sustaining health care competitive advantage requires that leaders understand environmental demands to assist with minimizing weakness and threats from the external environment. This assessment provides you with an opportunity to examine your health care environment to determine whether what is being accomplished in your organization, department, team, community project, or other care setting is making a positive difference.
Note: You will use the results of this analysis to develop a strategic plan in Assessment 2, which I will request you.
Preparation
You have been asked to conduct an analysis of your care setting that will result in two potential pathways toward a strategic plan to improve health care quality and safety in your organization, department, team, community project, or other care setting. To accomplish this, you will take two approaches to the analysis:
- Complete the discovery and dream phases of an appreciative inquiry (AI) project.
- Conduct a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis.
To help ensure that your analysis is well-received, the requester has suggested that you:
- Present your analysis results in four parts:
- Part 1: Appreciative Inquiry Discovery and Dream.
- Part 2: SWOT Analysis.
- Part 3: Comparison of Approaches.
- Part 4: Analysis of Relevant Leadership Characteristics and Skills.
- Your analysis should be 6 pages in length.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.
One key aspect to being an effective leader, manager, or administrator is an awareness of your leadership strengths, weaknesses, and style.
- How would you assess your general leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills?
- How would describe your leadership style? Transformational & Visionary
Imagine the future for a care setting that is your place of practice or one in which you would like to work.
- What aspirational goals can you envision that would lead to improvements in health care quality and safety?
- How well do these goals align with the mission, vision, and values of your care setting?
Analysis Requirements
Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide, so at a minimum, be sure to address each point. In addition, you are encouraged to review the performance level descriptions for each criterion to see how your work will be assessed.

Community Health Care Setting Environmental Analysis
Analyzing the community health care setting enables the strategic plan of improving safety and health care quality in an organization, its teams, departments, and community project. An Appreciative Inquiry (AI) incorporating the discovery and dream stages and a SWOT analysis combining the organization's strengths, weaknesses, available opportunities, and possible threats enable strategic plan analysis. The analysis helps to create healthcare strategies and determine the positive attributes of a care setting. This paper analyzes the community healthcare setting using AI and SWOT analysis techniques to support its strategic plan.
Appreciative Inquiry Discovery and Dream
AI systematically discovers the strengths and positive practices that can improve quality care in a care setting. It is an action research technique for enhancing organizational growth and management quality, leading to a better work environment (TR et al., 2022). In the discovery stage, the AI analysis technique can incorporate focus group discussions and interviews with healthcare providers to ask about the positive things and strengths regarding quality care and safety. They would appreciate the organization’s successes and positive attributes through their answers. Consequently, the setting can discover the factors that affect quality care, safety, and workers' motivation (TR et al., 2022). It can then implement actions and design strategic plans to enable excellent care provision. Conversely, the dream stage helps organizations to reshape the future by achieving opportunities. Stakeholders can share common ideas regarding factors that can improve their work environment (TR et al., 2022). They can answer questions regarding opportunities for growth and goal achievement. TR et al. (2022) explained that such transformative conversations recognize elements that enhance better patient care.
During AI analysis in the community healthcare setting, nurses in the focus group discussions and interviews narrated that they were very excited since the facility had achieved quality and safety goals regarding zero medication errors. The facility has implemented an electronic prescribing system, a computerized physician order entry system (CPOE), an automated dispensing cabinet, and barcoding medication systems. Their stories relate to safety and quality goals regarding medication errors since the electronic prescribing system helped the facility to reduce medication errors associated with illegible handwriting; the CPOE ensured that only the medication orders in the health computers were dispensed; the automated dispensing cabinet facilitated drugs dispensation; while the barcoding medication system enhanced proper medication (Mayet et al., 2023). Consequently, the facility experienced positive aspects of enhanced patient safety and reduced medication errors. In one month following the quality and safety strategies, there were zero reported medication errors.
The healthcare providers' stories reflected technological and teamwork themes. The facility has adopted a technological theme in recording, prescribing, dispensing, and administering drugs, enhancing zero medication errors. The facility also reflects a teamwork theme since there is an inter-professional collaboration to prevent medication errors. The physician prescribes medication using the CPOE and electronic prescribing systems, the pharmacist uses automated dispensing devices to dispense the prescribed drugs, and the nurses use a barcoding medication system during drug administration (Mayet et al., 2023). Consequently, the comprehensive data in the facility reflected a reduced mortality rate related to medication errors, validating its strength and positive aspect of patient safety. It also received awards and accreditations to acknowledge its excellence in patient safety. Nevertheless, whether the facility had trained its entire staff, including the subordinates, regarding quality improvement actions to enhance the achievement of quality and safety goals is unknown.
The facility can also adopt patient-centered and evidence-based practice goals. Healthcare providers should always explain all therapeutic plans concerning individual patients, including benefits, costs, and risks (MacGillivray, 2020). Consequently, well-informed patients and healthcare personnel can make optimal healthcare decisions. The care setting should also always use evidence-based practices due to continually evolving clinical practices. The facility can introduce continuous medical education to update personnel’s knowledge and skills. Achieving the patient-centered care goal would ensure respect for patients’ cultural values and needs and enhance patients' input and outcomes (MacGillivray, 2020). Alternatively, accomplishing the goal of evidence-based practice would enhance beneficence and adequate healthcare provision. Health practitioners should be culturally and ethically responsible and rely on guideline-directed and science-based practices, not personal and traditional experiences (MacGillivray, 2020). The facility's mission is to offer evidence-based, patient-centered, and high-quality care, aligning with patient-centered and evidence-based practice goals. Furthermore, the organization's vision aligns with these two goals since it aims to improve patient outcomes through extraordinary medical care, skills, and knowledge. Additionally, its respect, safety, compassion, and quality values align with providing individualized and evidence-based care since they enhance patients' health outcomes. The patient-centered goal is based on the assumption that the setting primarily focuses on mitigating medication errors without directly involving the patient. Conversely, the evidence-based goal is founded on the assumption that the facility must continually train its staff on new scientific evidence.
SWOT Analysis
The community healthcare setting has various strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats concerning safety and quality goals. The facility's strengths include advanced technological systems, such as CPOE and barcoding medication systems; excellent inter-professional...
