Understanding the different kinds of stroke is essential for every healthcare professional. It allows him to understand the different causes of this disease better and provide the appropriate treatment as early as possible. Accordingly, this article would focus on differentiating between the two basic types of strokes; (1) ischemic stroke and (2) hemorrhagic stroke.
The main difference between the two types of strokes is their cause. On the one hand, ischemic strokes happen when one of the small arteries that are going to the brain is blocked. This is the more common type of stroke, as it is estimated that around 87% of the strokes that happen are of the ischemic type CITATION Hop21 \l 1033 (HopkinsMedicine.Org, 2021). On the other hand, Hemorrhagic strokes happen when the same artery leads to brain bursts, thereby resulting in bleeding. Compared to the previous type, estimates show that this only happens to around 13% of all recorded cases every year.
One of the means to prevent or mitigate the occurrence of stroke is through observation of different warning signals. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2020), some of the early warning signals that are indicated of stroke are; (1) sudden difficulty or lack of vision on both eyes, (2) sudden lack of coordination, balance, or capability to walk, (3) sudden and severe headache, (4) and sudden confusion or difficulty speaking. When any of these instances happen, and there are no underlying causes or conditions that might have triggered it, then it would be better to treat it as an early warning for stroke.
