Introduction
I am using the first week to understand extensive knowledge pieces that I would accumulate during the current practicum. In this vein, I would be prepared to commence my clinical by determining the requirements, my clinical objectives, dates, times, and placement area within my clinical preceptor. This report reviews both a counseling and nursing theory that could guide my practice as a nursing student. The journal will also address three goals and objectives for the practicum experience and my practicum activities timeline.
Nursing and Counseling Theories
I selected Hildegard Peplau Theory of Interpersonal Relations as the nursing theory guiding my practice. During psychotherapy, the Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) needs to cultivate an environment of mutual trust to attain the therapy’s efficacy thresholds. The Interpersonal Relations theory incorporates four stages of the PMHNP and their client engagement – orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution. First, the patient describes their issue during the orientation while the psychiatric nurse fills the assessment template. I selected this theory since it cultivates trust that is crucial for effective practitioner-client interactions. I have interacted with many patients who found it challenging to disclose their trauma until the theory was comfortable with me. Next, the care plan is created in the identification stage since the patient has a heightened trust that their problem would be fixed (Deane & Fain, 2016). Next, in the exploitation step, the care plan is executed, ensuring that actions are tailored to meet the objectives (Bittencourt et al., 2018). Finally, the professional engagement is terminated at the resolution stage after the patient’s issue has been resolved through collaboration (Deane & Fain, 2016). It is possible to employ this theory since it offers an approach to cultivate a mutual trust relationship essential in client-practitioner engagement.
