Assignment 1: Professional Advocacy

Coursework Instructions:
For this assignment, you submit two individual letters. The letters should be regarding two different issues. Submission of the same letter to each person will result in a grade of zero. One letter should be written to your state senator or state representative to advocate for a professional issue that is relevant to your state of practice. Select State Legislature Websites to locate your state legislators. The second letter should be written to your member of the U.S. Congress (your U.S. senator or your U.S. House of Representatives member). To locate your U.S. senators and U.S. representatives, use these links: Find Your U.S. Senators Find Your U.S. House Representative Using the information from Week 14 Discussion 1: APRN Political Action State Initiatives on the issues identified by your state professional organization advocacy team. This is the problem I wrote about: (According to the Massachusetts Nurse Practitioner Association (MNPA), the ongoing political action initiatives in the state include House Bill 2669 and Senate Bill 1163, which propose expanding opportunities for NPs to offer services and promoting private and public health insurance coverage. The proposed bills are anchored on the premise that NPs constitute over 90 percent of primary care providers within the community health centers. In addition, they mention that objective evidence established that diverse clinician groups are instrumental in fostering access to care, arresting healthcare inflation, and augmenting health outcomes. These issues restrict my practice by widening existing discriminatory practices for NPs who seek equitable compensation within such settings (Amankwah et al., 2024). In particular, the discriminatory practices restrict NPs from earning comparable wages and benefits as their colleagues offering similar services to similar patients within similar environments despite demonstrating higher educational qualifications. This unequal treatment is inherently exploitative; thus, it needs to be addressed. If these issues get resolved, my practice will change positively by harmonizing the compensation and benefits received with my knowledge, skills, and potential contributions to value-based care and patient outcomes. Instead of inequitable compensation and benefits discriminated by such factors as higher education and experience levels, NPs in Massachusetts will be compensated like their colleagues in similar states while also receiving comparable benefits. I will actively participate in the resolution of this issue by supporting the proposed bills through sharing the importance of allowing tax contributions that advance affordable care and coverage to local communities (Navathe et al., 2022). In addition, I will encourage my colleagues to support the proposed bills’ passage into law) Write a letter to one of your members of the U.S. Congress (U.S. Senate or U.S. House of Representatives) and a letter to one of your state legislators. Remember, these letters should be on different issues. In these letters, identify: The issue Why it is an issue How it affects patient care and outcomes How it restricts practice A suggestion for removing such barriers Use information learned from this class and provided by your classmates from different states to provide an argument for change. Submit your draft letters for this assignment. Your faculty will provide feedback, so that you can strengthen the letters before mailing them. For this assignment to be considered complete, you must submit two letters (one for the state legislator and one for the U.S. senator or representative) that address all the prompts listed. Please also submit proof of having sent these letters. Please write a page for each letter.

This is still a burning problem since despite providing primary care to more than 90 percent of the communities in the state of Massachusetts, and being highly educated and offering the same services as other clinicians, NPs still have to grapple with discriminatory compensation practices. This disparity lowers labor stability as well as patient outcomes. Burnout, constrained provider retention, and provider staffing shortages caused by unequal pay to NPs in the course of equal work drive staffing shortages and result in patient delays to primary care services. Literature shows that multidisciplinary clinician teams enhance health quality, lower medical cost increase, and increase access to care. Nonetheless, unfair pay undermines this workforce and eventually d...
