Focus of the assignment:

Nursing professor salaries in Arizona need to be increased to address the shortage of nursing educators. Please provide statistics. This shortage contributes to the state's nursing shortage as nursing schools have to turn qualified students away due to not enough faculty. Nursing professors have increased responsibilities and increased demands for advanced and specialized education. There is lack of incentive for nurses with this high level of education to pursue teaching versus clinical positions since clinical positions pay better. If not addressed this issue will prevent the nursing workforce from meeting healthcare needs. Look at the recommendations for nursing education in the IOM 2011 report "Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health". Need legislation for funds to increase salary for nursing professors. Washington State passed Action Now! that resulted in wage increase for nursing faculty.

Problem
The healthcare industry is expected to add four million jobs to be added by 2020. This was in line with the recommendation from the Institute of Medicine stating that at least 80% of the nursing workforce should have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The execution of this plan however has proven to be a problem because the supply of registered nursed does not match the demand. One of the factors causing the shortage can be attributed to a shortage in another department. Nursing professors in the state of Arizona feel like they are being shortchanged consequently, the profession is starting to lose their appeal. Salaries are a major issue for nursing professors as their position demands them to provide advanced and specialized education to nurses. However, the compensation is not fair for this kind of responsibility leading to a lack of incentive from university students or high learned nurses to peruse teaching positions over clinical positions. This shortage is having an immediate effect on students who are aspiring to peruse a career in nursing. Nursing schools are being forced to turn away qualified students due to the lack of enough faculty. The snowballing effect from this is the nursing crisis in Arizona will get even worse. This will also impact on patient care as inadequate nursing staff can contribute to increased rates of infection, increase hospital stays duration, deaths, and failure in rescue incidents.
Solution
The 2019-2020 Enrollment and Graduations in Baccalaureate and Graduate Programs in Nursing report by AACN’s backs this claim. Nursing school in the US turned away 80,407 qualified applicants for baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs in 2019. Reason being, the insufficient number of faculty, spaces in classrooms, clinical sites, and budget constraints CITATION Rob20 \l 1033 (Rosseter, 2020). My idea for this situation is increasing the compensation for nursing teaching faculty thus creating an incentive and making the positions desirable. To achieve this, legislation is the best advocacy to provide a balance that is in favor of practicing nurses, students, and the teaching faculty. At the moment, there is higher compensation in the clinical practice and the ever-growing private sector. Therefore, current and potential nursing educators are being lured away from the teaching practice. Efforts to improve this situation are being frustrated by the first issue which is qualified students being turned away. This applies to nurse graduates who wish to pursue masters and doctoral programs. Therefore, the nursing education department is not producing a large enough pool of nurse educators to meet the huge demand. To achieve this, legislation is the best advocacy to provide a balance that is in favor of practicing nurses, students, and the teaching faculty.
Research on the issue
The International Nursing Education Network (NEN) in collaboration with e ICN and the U.S. National League for Nursing (NLN) is a proposed solution to address international shortages of nurses and nurse faculty. Since its inaugural meeting in Durban, South Africa, it has looked to intervene in areas of recruitment and retention while considering microeconomics. The method used to achieve this is the SR, a comprehensive and unbiased review process for locating, synthesizing, and analyzing, world faculty CITATION Dee13 \l 1033 (Nardi & Gyurko, 2013). The systematic synthesis involved a reanalysis of published documents, papers, and statements from international nursing organizations. Out of the 181 recommendations, eight common solution themes emerged after analysis and comparisons. Two of the proposed solutions I feel are similar and support my idea for solving the problem. They include creating an educational paradigm change that is supported by 28.33% and competitive faculty salaries supported by 3.33% of the recommendations published CITATION Dee13 \l 1033 (Nardi & Gyurko, 2013).
Evidence 1
There is a feeling that nursing education is slow to change in the world where technology and new ways of practice are coming up. Also, the curriculum and qualifications have been a matter of question for the role they play in nursing education. At the moment, approximately 60% of registered nurses in the US are prepared d at the associate degree level. However, only around 21% continue their education to higher levels meaning the potential pool for nursing educators continue to shrink. The state of Massachusetts has used this perspective to try and address its nursing shortage. It developed the Nurse of the Future Core Nursing Competencies which is a program intending to educate more and well-prepared nurses. Its goal is to standardize the outcomes of education consequently graduating graduate more nurses to care for its citizens.
Evidence 2
Creating competitive faculty salaries needs innovative solutions like amending tax laws in respective states. The State of Hawaii has passed such a law that is aimed at using the power of tax code to bolster preceptors. Preceptors are the backbone of clinical education as they provide onsite education to nurses and physicians. Their shortage has been made worse by the doctor of nursing practice...
