Violence in Sports Case Study: Koffman V. Garnett Name Institutional Affiliation Course Name & Number Professor Date Q1. What is the ethical dilemma or dilemmas posed in this case study? The ethical dilemmas exhibited by the case include whether the decision by Garnett to order Koffman to stand still and upright without defending himself and then tackling him to the ground, breaking the humerus bone in his left arm is a case of the coach going too far and being negligence and assaulting Koffman. Another ethical dilemma is whether Koffman was justified in viewing his attack and subsequent hurt by coach Garnett as a case of intentionally causing bodily harm and gross negligence, considering the coach had never tackled another player before. Third, was coach Garnett’s action a hazing action towards the inexperienced Koffman, who was part of the defensive team that cost the team their first game and first training session? Also, could the actions of coach Garnett in injuring Koffman be considered part of the game, as it is expected that players can get hurt while playing football (Thomas Reuters, 2003). Another ethical dilemma is whether the coach was justified in attacking Hoffman without his prior consent. Q2. What should the goal of the sports management professional be when first addressing the problem? The sports management expert’s primary goal in the case is to define the problem by establishing all the vital facts. To solve a problem, the professional must identify and understand the situation in question by gathering facts and evidence without jumping to conclusions. It would involve discovering who was involved in the incident and how the events unfolded, from when the coach rallied the players to demonstrate proper tackling procedures to when Koffman got hurt (Thomas Reuters, 2003). Next would be to consider the different parties’ perspectives by interviewing Koffman to hear his first-hand experience and feelings. Next, talk to Garnett to establish the sequence of the events, why he chose Koffman for the demonstration, and why he aggressively tackled Koffman.  Q3. What is the best ethical model to use to approach the ethical situation posed? The appropriate ethical model to utilize in this situation is the deontological ethical model. According to Paquette, Sommerfeldt & Kent (2015), the deontological ethics model, also known as the duty-based model, argues that an action is considered morally upright due to its various characteristics and not its consequences to a group of people. Immanuel Kant, the author of the model, believed that it is everyone’s duty to treat each person as an end to a case and not as a means to an end, as people are essential human beings that should be respected at all times, because it is the right thing to do and not because it benefits the majority. Moreover, in group settings, all people should receive respectful treatment, even when that treatment does not bring any benefit to others, as if one team member feels exploited or abused, the whole team can fall apart (Paquette, Sommerfeldt & Kent, 2015, pp. 34-39). Hence, it is everyone’s duty to treat each individual as a valuable member.  Q4. As a sports management professional, what other information would you need to have to make an ethical decision? Other than the facts of the case, a sportsman management professional would need the following information to make an ethical decision. One is the required information to make an ethical decision. It includes all the necessary information to paint a clear picture of the case and assumptions made. Two are concerns about...
