Nurses are responsible for taking care of patients both inpatients and outpatients. As a result, they need to have the necessary skills, attitude, judgment and knowledge to perform such tasks satisfactorily. Learning by nurses is a continuous process. A nurse has a standard competent care level as well as a standard competent behavior level to ensure that one performs within the expected performance and practice. A nurse should assess, diagnose, identify outcomes, and plan on the alternatives and strategies to follow as well as implementing the strategies. Further, one has to teach patients on healthcare issues (Rowell, 2003).
A nursing organization can help nurses operate to full competency by identifying the nurse`s learning needs, allowing them participate in learning and educational experiences and helping the develop and maintain one`s clinical and professional knowledge and skills.
