This week we will be reading Amanda Boston’s ‘Gentrifying the City: From Racialized Neglect to Racialized Reinvestment.’ Create a StoryMap explaining how gentrification is unfolding in a neighborhood and city of your choice. You may choose Brooklyn, NY, as it is the subject of both the assigned video and article for this week, or you may choose another neighborhood and city of your choice.
Your presentations must engage with Boston’s critique of gentrification as a process of "racialized neglect" and "racialized reinvestment." As you choose your images and create your maps, think about the history of your chosen neighborhood and city, as well as the social composition (race, class, ethnicity) of its residents. Your Story Map must consist of no less than four images.
Make sure to provide proper citations for all maps and images used, as well as a list of references at the end of your stories. Gentrification in Palo Altos
For a long time, the housing stock in Palo Altos has been affordable than other places in the California. However, gentrification has reversed this affordability, changing the perception of the value of this city. Essentially, the growing trend of gentrification in Palo Alto has resulted in significant economic and social changes. The settling of the tech powerhouses like Facebook in the Bay Area marked the beginning of the Palo Alto change (Chang, 2020). Facebook, whose headquarters lie on the Menlo Park and East Palo border longed to make the community safer for new employees (Chang, 2020). Predominantly inhabited by black and Latino communities, Palo Alto was portrayed as a hotspot for crime before Facebook and other giant companies existed within its vicinity. The map below compares the level of crime in Palo Altos with the neighboring cities before gentrification.

Currently, the city is recording a high number of white affluent community, replacing black population that has historically dominated the region. With the influx of high-income households in the city, housing has become unaffordable for most people of color living in the area. The emergence of additional high-wage tech workers and the need for expensive housing programs have forced lower-wage households to move out of their homes (Ayon-Facundo, 2018). Research shows that a myriad of factors including geography, economic activities and land use contribute to the city’s displacement of low-income communities by high-income residents (Chapple & Zuk, 2015). Non-profit organizations that support reinvestments in the city are responsible for these activities. Since black communities are being displaced by high-income earners, neighboring regions such as Stamford, East Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos, and Menlo Park are at the verge of experiencing congestion due to the movement of the displaced communities into the neighborhoods.
