Collaborative Learning in the Social Studies Classroom
Collaborative learning in the social studies classroom helps to encourage communication, teamwork, and provides the opportunity for students to learn from one another. Teachers who plan engaging collaborative activities for their students provide a variety of learning opportunities and choice centered, many times, on the same academic standards and content.

Learning Activity
Grade one students will team up in teams of four pupils, and every group will create a family diagram with members of the family.
Role of Teacher
The teacher will first teach the pupils what a family is and how a family occurs in modern society.

Role of Students
The students will develop discussions in their groups on what they each understand what a family is and then create a family diagram for the group.
Integration of the Arts
Arts will play an illustrative role by featuring the various members of a family.
Media or Technology Integration
Students will watch a video on YouTube on what a family is, where they will see the various members of a family.
Differentiation
Grade one students with no physical disabilities will receive normal lectures and video illustrations of what a family is. Technologies for special students, such as the use of Braille for blind students, will be embraced. Enhancements in the learning environment will be provided for ELL students to ensure that they understand what a family is and its composition, such as translating learning material to languages they understand.
Formative Assessment
Students will do a written test on what a family is and what members of the family are.
