Case Study Covering Female Athletes Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Course Instructor Due Date Case Study Covering Female Athletes Question #1 After examining the image and the argument presented in the Word document, Sports Illustrated did not violate morals or any social norms when it published Vonn's picture as it did. In this case, publishing the image on the cover may be construed as the magazine’s move to ensure gender justice by ensuring that females also get attention for their athletic ability (Pye & Stroud, 2024). The Word document clearly states that female athletes get very little coverage in media compared to males. Similarly, I also believe there was nothing ethically wrong with the image since it has no sexual connotation. The sexual argument is based on a comparison of A. J. Kitt and Vonn’s depiction in the picture. According to Nicole LaVoi, she believed that the male skier, though captured in a similar position as Vonn, his image was captured when in action (Pye & Stroud, 2024). On the contrary, she believes that the fact that Vonn did not have a helmet and was looking at the photographer suggests she was not going down the hill. This argument alone does not justify the sexualization argument, and anybody who sees it sexually must have some wild thoughts and imagination.   Question #2 The argument that Vonn’s portrayal on the cover page may have sexual connotations will change if this image increases interest in female competitive skiing. The different ethical perception of this portrayal would be because the magazine's primary goal will have been passed across. From a layman’s perspective, Sports Illustrated is not an erotic magazine, meaning that it targets people interested in sports. Therefore, their intention of publishing this image may be construed as being based on the need to create awareness about women’s participation in skiing (Pye & Stroud, 2024).
