Measure Up: Exploring Length Units Through Hands-On Activities

Lesson Summary and Focus:

This lesson aims to help students in grades 1-2 express the length of an object as a whole number of length units by laying multiple copies of a shorter object end to end. Through interactive and tactile activities, students will gain a solid understanding of measurement and the concept of units, which is essential for mathematical development (Muñoz et al., 2022).

Classroom and Student Factors/Grouping:

Two male students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and fall under Tier 3 Response to Intervention (RTI), indicating they require specialized support. Additionally, there is a female student who utilizes hearing aids and would greatly benefit from the incorporation of an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device.

Standard: 3.MD.4 - Generate Measurement Data (Arizona Department of Education, 2016).

Specific Learning Target(s)/Objectives:

Given a set of measurement comparisons and AACD support materials, the student will correctly communicate measurement comparisons for at least four different scenarios.
Given various measurement tasks, including the use of AACD and traditional measuring instruments, the student will independently and accurately measure and compare lengths.
Given classroom discussions and collaborative measurement activities, with AACD support, the student will actively participate, contributing both verbally and non-verbally to the activities.

Section 2: Instructional Planning
Anticipatory Set
* I will display a picture of various objects of different lengths on the board and ask students to discuss and guess which object is longer or shorter than the others using their AACD devices.
* I will provide each student with a mystery box containing objects of different lengths, and I will ask them to use their AACD devices to communicate their measurements and compare the lengths of the objects inside.
* I will present a series of images depicting everyday scenarios involving measurement, such as measuring a room's length or comparing the lengths of different objects. Students will use their AACD devices to discuss these scenarios, predict the outcomes, and share their thoughts on how measurement plays a role in everyday life.

I will use a variety of visual measurement tools, such as rulers, measuring tapes, and visual representations of these tools, to cater to different learning styles. This will allow students to see and physically interact with the measurement instruments (Hansen et al., 2019).
