Alumni campaigns

Coursework Instructions:
All colleges and universities attempt to supplement institutional resources via appeals for assistance from alumni, “friends” of the college or university, private entities with whom the institution does business, and initiatives that may be addressed through grant funding. For the purpose of this discussion, however, you are asked to limit your search for additional revenue to the development of an ongoing alumni campaign. To prepare: • Gather information concerning alumni campaigns at two different institutional types. • Choose one two-year or four-year public institution and one private institution of your choice. You may want to choose your current affiliated institution or, perhaps, your alma mater for either category. • Be sure to choose institutions that are not fundraising behemoths, such as Stanford, Harvard, or University of California, Berkeley. Small colleges and small- to medium-size universities will be more interesting. Write a 3- to 4-page paper contrasting the approaches of the two institutions’ Alumni Support Campaign (or however it is referred to by the institutions). The paper should include the following: • An explanation of what you consider to be the most innovative portions of each campaign. What events or activities do they use? • A description of the elements you would include, based on your thoughts and previous experience, if you had responsibility to develop a campaign for an institution in your part of the country. Also consider what you have learned from examining the campaigns of the two institutions you have chosen. • An explanation of how each strategy will raise a specific amount of money (your estimate of how much over expenses). • The website addresses for the universities and colleges you selected in your research.
