Cisco routers and switches have four different four main types of memories: read-only memory (ROM), also known as erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM), flash memory, random-access memory (RAM), which is also known as dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), and the non-volatile RAM (NVRAM). Routers traditionally store images, microcode, and configuration files in these memories (Bryant, 2020). On any Cisco device, ROM is used to store ROM monitoring software that is critical in providing a user interface (UI) used for troubleshooting the ROM as well as the boot loader or a helper software used to boot the router if it is unable to find a valid image of the Internetwork Operating Systems (IOS) in the flash memory. The Cisco IOS software image is stored in the flash memory, and in many platforms, this memory is used to store configuration files or boot images. Flash memories may be shipped as single in-line memory modules (SIMMs) or dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) based on the hardware platform. Besides, flash memories can be of different types, including bootflash that store the boot image, internal flash memory with system image, or flash memory PC cards, also known as the Personal ...
