Introduction
Substance abuse, which is used to relieve pain and for recreational purposes, presents a considerable global health challenge. Following the documented annual death toll of about 11.8 million worldwide attributed to drug abuse, primarily including smoking, alcohol, and illicit drug use, the most awaited action must be taken to counter the situation. This multifactorial and chronic, relapsing nature of drug addiction entails accordingly a comprehensive approach that covers not only biological and behavioral but also social aspects as well. Recent scientific progress points to the necessity of a personalized approach for the treatment and management of drug addiction due to the lack of effectiveness of the current therapeutic interventions and programs (Nadeau et al., 2021; Cheron & Kerchove d’Exaerde, 2021).
Pathophysiology of Substance Abuse Disorders
The neurobiological foundation of addiction, irrefutably overlapping and intricately related to behavioral and social factors, is convoluted and involves intricate neural networks with multiple molecular mechanisms in play. The addictive effect of drugs is an outcome of the brain's reward pathway, especially the mesolimbic pathway, which is altered by drugs and thus causes compulsive drug-seeking behaviors and addiction. The very specialized neural regions, including the area of ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens (NAc), attest to the model to be the addictive stages of consumption, withdrawal, and craving (Nadeau et al., 2021; Cheron & Kerchove d’Exaerde, 2021).
Synaptic plasticity, which is a core feature of brain function, in one way or another, remits drugs-induced neuroadaptations. When drugs like cocaine are taken, it manipulates the circuits in the brain that are responsible for synaptic transmission, and thereby, the normal function of the neurons is suppressed, which subsequently promotes the drug cravings and drive that leads to addictive behaviors. Glutamatergic and GABAergic modulation in VTA and NAc shows the complex interactions between neurotransmitter systems in forming addiction (Nadeau et al., 2021; Cheron & Kerchove d’Exaerde, 2021).
Additionally, drug craving and relapse during withdrawal prove the necessity of specific treatment plans to help them overcome the problem. Insights drawn from preclinical model observations and clinical evidence further highlight the impact of synaptic modifications, mainly AMPA receptor trafficking, as one of the significant factors driving craving syndromes and relapse behaviors. The discovery of GluA2-lacking AMPA receptors being probed as potential therapeutic targets gives immense hope for drug discovery in addiction treatment (Nadeau et al., 2021).
Significance of Substance Abuse Treatment Programs
Substance abuse treatment programs often provide the right solutions to the blended problem of substance use disorders and offer individuals the desired path of recovery. Unlike the temporary solutions that may be used to help prevent a person from taking the drug, treatment includes individualized solutions that cater to each person's needs. Evidence-based guidelines guide healthcare providers in choosing the proper treatment and follow-up scheme for patients considering signs and symptoms or conditions. Through proper client placement, treatment programs will be efficient in not hiding the root problems that cause substance abuse, as well as assist in sustainable recovery. Depending on the condition, whether it is medication-assisted therapy for the problematic use of opioids or just outpatient counseling or inpatient rehabilitation, these programs set up support systems through which individuals disentangle addiction, spot causes, and create coping strategies (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022).
