COURSE PROJECT

The Course Project is graded. Whereas some of the questions are fun, I am looking for concepts learned throughout the course in each of your responses. The project is worth 40% of your grade. Read each question or directive carefully. Each question or directive requires responses that are analytical and that involve some critical thinking. In other words, your responses should not be one word. You will lose points if you do not provide an analysis with your responses. If you have any questions, you can use the Discussion Thread in Canvas OR send me a message.

PLEASE READ EACH QUESTION/DIRECTIVE CAREFULLY. ANSWER ALL 10 QUESTIONS.

  1. LITERALLY, draw a picture (not computer-generated)! How would you illustrate information literacy? Be creative and explain your design.

  1. This question tests your ability in identifying scholarly articles and fulfilling an information need. Find two (2) scholarly articles that discusses domestic violence in correlation with football games. Include enough information so that I can find these articles, like article titles and author names. Do not give me links into databases – they might not work. Explain why you chose these two sources to fit this information need.
  1. Evaluate each of the following websites using the criteria and concepts discussed in the course:

  1. The Truth About Green Tea for Weight Loss

https://www.consumerreports.org/dieting-weight-loss/truth-about-green-tea-for-weight-loss/

  1. Testing the Boundaries of the Consideration Doctrine: Can you Contract to Buy and Sell a Ghost?

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1037969X19882485

  1. Marijuana Use: Detrimental to Youth

https://www.acpeds.org/the-college-speaks/position-statements/effect-of-marijuana-legalization-on-risky-behavior/marijuana-use-detrimental-to-youth

  1. Ben & Jerry’s needs a new ice cream flavor. They want it to be about information literacy. (Odd right?) What should this new flavor be called and describe the flavor? Be creative and explain your reasoning.

  1. Read the chapter, “Statistical Significance,” found in CANVAS (Under FILES or linked from the Project Assignment page). This chapter is from the book I have mentioned several times throughout the course, Documents That Changed the Way We Live. After reading the chapter, how do you think the document being discussed is related to any of the concepts we have talked about in class? Do not evaluate this chapter by telling me it is credible and that the author used citations. This question is asking you to apply the concepts of information literacy to the document, much like I talked about the other documents in the book in Module 1. There is more than one answer to this question.

  1. Read the chapter, “Let Me Google That For You,” found in Canvas (Under FILES or linked from the Project Assignment page). This chapter is from the book, The Death of Expertise: The Campaign Against Established Knowledge and Why It Matters. After reading the chapter, what do you think the message is in the chapter? How does it relate to the concepts we have talked about in class? Do you agree with the argument being made?

  1. Write a haiku about information literacy. Don’t know what a haiku is? Google it. And if you are still confused – just ask me.

  1. Answer the following prompts. Search for the best source you can find – not just the first one that “pops up.” Provide the answer and the citation for the source. Extra credit if your citation is in proper APA or MLA format.

  1. Find the most current SWOT analysis of the company, Skechers. You must be able to access the entire document. Explain how and where you found it.

  2. What is the current minimum wage for Florida, New Jersey, and South Dakota? What was it before the current increase for these states? Which two states have the lowest minimum wage? Answer all of these questions with one source.

  3. Find a credible website, within the last year, arguing how Tom Brady is not the greatest QB of all time. You will lose points by giving me a source that argues that he is the greatest QB of all time. (For fun – tell me who you think will win the Super Bowl this year).

  1. Using one of your social media feeds, find a post/thread referring to an actual event or statement or person or anything that seems questionable and would need to be verified. Then go verify it. Explain your process and provide evidence to whatever it is you are trying to verify. Please provide a link or screen shot so I understand what the post was. (Please, do not choose to verify the score of a sporting event, or a basic event.) If you do not have any social media feeds – let me know and you will receive an alternative question.

  1. What was the most super, most awesome, most interesting thing about this course?

1 LITERALLY, draw a picture (not computer-generated)! How would you illustrate information literacy? Be creative and explain your design.

Digital technology has driven advances in the different fields of knowledge. It made it easier to live in terms of communication and education. It has also improved societies by boosting the efficiency in most types of labor (Tyner, 2014).
This drawing illustrates the significance of information literacy. Nowadays, information is readily available in one click. Through the internet, one can find a wide variety of sources about a single topic. In this drawing, I decided to draw a person that sits in front of a computer and looking at google. The person seems curious about a topic and google feeds it with the information that he needs.
2 This question tests your ability in identifying scholarly articles and fulfilling an information need. Find two (2) scholarly articles that discusses domestic violence in correlation with football games. Include enough information so that I can find these articles, like article titles and author names. Do not give me links into databases – they might not work. Explain why you chose these two sources to fit this information need.
* Card, D., & Dahl, G. B. (2011). Family violence and football: The effect of unexpected emotional cues on violent behavior. The Quarterly Journal of Economics, 126(1), 103-143.
This journal article discusses the association between the family violence accompanying emotional signals in professional athletes’ wins and losses. I chose this article because its elements are complete. It clearly discusses its main objective which is also evident in its title. Furthermore, the sampling, methodology and data gathering, and interpretation of results are comprehensive. This study revealed that losses that caused great disappointment chiefly affects the football player’s attitude toward his/her family while losses from close fights produced irrelevant outcomes. By contrast, upset wins and losses produced disproportionate behavioral results (Card & Dahl, 2011).
* Adubato, B. (2016). The promise of violence: televised, professional football games and domestic violence. Journal of sport and social issues, 40(1), 22-37.
This is a peer-reviewed journal article that has been published in a reliable academic journal, the Journal of Sport and Social Issues. Here, Adubato (2016) studied the connection between domestic violence and televised, professional football games. I chose this article to fit the need because it satisfies the elements of a good journal article since it contains the person or problem, intervention, comparison, and outcome CITATION NYU20 \l 1033 (NYU Libraries, 2020). Additionally, its contents are reliable due to its in-text citations and proper referencing.
3 Evaluate each of the following websites using the criteria and concepts discussed in the course:
1 The Truth About Green Tea for Weight Loss
/dieting-weight-loss/truth-about-green-tea-for-weight-loss/
After skimming the website, I found out that the information they provide can be useful. It answers the base question on whether green tea can have weight loss effects CITATION Con18 \l 1033 (Consumer Reports, 2018). However, it does not provide scientific evidence or a comprehensive explanation. Additionally, although the article is quite updated, the author of the article has no credibility. There is no single author mentioned. Instead, it was conglomeration of different consumer reports.
2 Testing the Boundaries of the Consideration Doctrine: Can you Contract to Buy and Sell a Ghost?
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1037969X19882485
This is an updated peer-reviewed article. It was published under a credible journal, the SAGE Journal, thereby strengthening its credibility (Giancaspro, 2019). Furthermore, it provides a comprehensive information, provided that the researcher accessed the full article. It answers the question coherently with a credible data. However, if the researcher will only read the abstract, then there is scarcity of information.
3 Marijuana Use: Detrimental to Youth
/the-college-speaks/position-statements/effect-of-marijuana-legalization-on-risky-behavior/marijuana-use-detrimental-to-youth
This link brought me to the website of the American College of Pediatricians, the organization of all of the pediatricians in the United States, which makes the information a credible source. The article was written in April 2018, which means that the information written is still updated. The article tackled about marijuana, its uses, abuses, laws regulating it, addiction, and its specific effects to the brain, and everyday living CITATION Ame18 \l 1033 (American College of Pediatricians, 2018). The article was able to clearly illustrate and expound on the title using graphic presentations. Also, the author was able to give an acceptable conclusion.
4 Ben & Jerry’s needs a new ice cream flavor. They want it to be about information literacy. (Odd right?) What should this new flavor be called and describe the flavor? Be creative and explain your reasoning.
I will name the new flavor of the ice cream as “puppet tongue.” Puppet tongue is colored like a rainbow and has cacao sprinkles on top. This represents the colorful future that digital technology has offered to the lives of people, making information available to everyone. However, even when several information can salvage a person’s life, and even sanity, some of the information can be detrimental to the society. This dangerous aspect of information literacy is symbolized by the cacao sprinkles since these add-ons are bitter to the tongue but sweet in the end. The flavor will be a combination of sweet and bitter aftertaste, almost mimicking the taste of a latte. This represents the consequence of information literacy after every sweet and bitter success.
5 Read the chapter, “Statistical Significance,” found in CANVAS (Under FILES or linked from the Project Assignment page). This chapter is from the book I have mentioned several times throughout the course, Documents That Changed the Way We Live. After reading the chapter, how do you think the document being discussed is related to any of the concepts we have talked about in class? Do not evaluate this chapter by telling me it is credible and that the author used citations. This question is asking you to apply the concepts of information literacy to the document,...
