1 We live in a world where we have information freely flowing at our fingertips, metaphorically and literally. Compared to past technologies, I think we are at the height of the ease of retrieving information to the point where almost everything is accessible. Yet, it seems that instead of growing our potential at the same rate as the growth of technology, we have become locked in this “filter bubble” where what we can access becomes limited by our interests, which follows the concept of selective exposure (Cinelli et al., 2020).
2 Arguably, many companies streamline their marketing processes by manipulating the data we voluntarily (though sometimes unknowingly give) to appeal to us or call our attention and divert it from really important things like current global issues to pieces that pique our interest and take our time (Pariser, 2014).
3 With this diversion, we tend to get out of touch with the wealth of information that we could possibly behold. In a way, by letting our attention be taken away by something we see first through personalized or tailored pages on the internet, as given as an example by Pariser (2014) in his TED talk, we let vital information get away from us, and this vital information remains hidden to an extent, to a point where we are able to get the information too late, or we don’t get them at all, and this hinders people from attaining viewpoint diversity and locks them in with singular perspectives because they don’t have...
