Air transport is one of the most significant transport systems in the world. However, it faces security challenges such as hijacking by terrorist, or bombings, which have resulted in various security measures. One is screening procedures for passengers and bags. The measures see individuals and baggage undergo screening through metal detecting scans and elevated-risk screens such as pat-down and strip search of some passengers. Second, is a restriction of access to the various airport and airplane facilities considered sensitive such as the concourses or the cockpit through the use of control gates, sound alerts and monitors systems (Dr. Slack & Dr. Rodrigue, 2018).
The air transport security measures are ineffective. According to numerous researches, despite the introduction of passenger screenings, body scanners, and the intrusive pat-downs, terrorists can easily breach airports through various areas that security does not assess such as the ticket counters and shopping areas opened to the public. For instance, the 6th January shooting by Esteban Santiago who flew to Fort Lauderdale from Alaska with a checked firearm and ended up shooting people in the airport (Gilchrist, 2017 Jan 10).
