The indigenous or aboriginal people in Canada include communities such as the Indians, Inuit, and Métis, among others. Indigenous people have unique cultures that determine how they interact with other people and how they relate to the environment. Besides, the indigenous people in Canada are minorities who have distinct political, social, and economic characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant majority communities. The native people in Canada encountered similar problems to other native people in different parts of the world, such as Latin America and in the United States. The First Nation people experienced various difficulties where “huge numbers died in measles and smallpox epidemics, their culture was suppressed, their children were taken aware from them and put into boarding schools where the teachers tried to make them ‘think white’ (Gage, 1991). This quotation is critical because it highlights the plights of the indigenous people in Canada, and is interesting to find how the policies were set to try to eliminate the culture of the aboriginals by forcing the children to think like the Whites.
The concept of indigenous that was addressed in module two. It was learned that the indigenous people retained their social and cultural characteristics, and this distinguished them from the dominant communities. However, it is critical to note that the invasion of the aboriginals in Canada by colonialists was aimed at weakening their culture, which was considered weak, and they were required to accept the cultural practices of the white people....
