Re: progress report on owning and operating a brewpub Millersville, PA
Memorandum
Overview
The purpose of this memo is to inform you on the progress of my semester project. My semester project is owning and operating a brewpub in Millersville, PA, where students can drink, eat and relaxing. Brewpubs are very popular, especially in the younger generation. According to the National Beer Wholesalers Association, “U.S. consumers 21 years and older consumed 26.9 gallons of beer and cider per person during 2017. Our target customers are basically these college students and the consumers between the ages of 25 and 35.
My overall goal is to develop a grant proposal for owning and operating a brewpub in Millersville. We focus on several main parts managerial researches including marketing analysis, operation management analysis, financial management analysis, and organizational management analysis to ensure whether the business idea is workable and profitable. To achieve the highest chance of success in opening the new restaurant, we also used the business simulation to get the practical solution for the new business based on appropriate assumptions and the business knowledge and management methods to analyze the project in which we hope to achieve the sales forecasts, generating total net profits.
What still need to be completed and when it will be completed
For the proposal, we did data collection and data analysis which shows that the business will likely be operational in the proposed area. However, we still need to contact the respondents again as they will provide insights on their expectation about our business idea.

The problem encountered
So far, we changed our topic and rewrite the business proposal which lead our progress is a little behind. This condition force me to push research completion schedule forward which is a bit hastily. And when we first contact the potential respondents, some did not give respond. Some did not state whether they wanted to be contacted again which hindered the progress.
REPORT II
Subject: School Gardens
Memorandum
Purpose:
The purpose of this memo is to inform you on the progress of my semester project. My semester project is implementing a school garden into Eshleman Elementary School. The importance of school garden has many aspects. Implementing gardens into schools have been proven to decrease the achievement gap, increase social, emotional, and physical health. Nutrition has also been known to improve as well.
There is much research to show that school gardens benefit students in many different ways. A study of third and fourth graders involved in a school garden and nutrition program found that “the school garden supports student inquiry, connection to the natural world, and engages students in the process of formulating meaningful questions” (Habib & Doherty, 2007). Students involved with school gardens generally take pleasure in learning and show positive attitudes towards education (Canaris, 1995; Dirks & Orvis, 2005). Schools gardens would inevitably help close the achievement and learning gaps found throughout schools and students. All students at Eshleman Elementary School would have an equal opportunity to help a garden grow and be taught the fundamentals of gardening.
For the research I will conduct many different events will take place. A curriculum will be put in place to teach students about gardening. With the focus on how plants grow, what plants need to grow, how to plant, what types of fruits and vegetables could be planted. Each grade level will have their own curriculum to support appropriate academic levels. Teachers of each grade level will come together to plan a curriculum that will best work in their classroom.
The students will be surveyed to choose what plants their grade level will plant and tend for. Each grade level will be responsible for a certain fruit or vegetable plant. There are two classes per grade and both classes from the same grade will tend to the same plants. Students will choose from strawberries, blueberries, green beans, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, basil, and parsley.
A meeting will be held after school to spread the word of a new school garden. A flyer will go home to students with a time and date, then teachers and staff will hold a meeting in the gymnasium at Eshleman Elementary School. The meeting will discuss the changes in curriculum, the location of the garden, the costs of supply (mostly donations) and any volunteers that would like to help get the garden started. The garden drive will also be discussed during this meeting. Parents, teachers and members of the community will select a date and place where the garden drive will occur and what types of supplies we will be looking for (seeds, soil, rakes, garden gloves, watering cans).
Research to be conducted on incorporating a school garden would be a school survey to record teachers and staff’s opinions on the proposal. Then, a community meeting would be held to involve parents and members of the town to discuss the next steps. A community garden drive would be put together by teachers and staff to gather donations and gardening supplies. Teachers would then develop a “Garden Curriculum” to be implemented into classrooms. Teachers and students would then plant a garden full of fruits, vegetables, flowers and various plants.
Completed Research:
Research that has been completed is both teachers and students have been surveyed on their opinions of what plants they would like to grow for their grades.
● Kindergarten- strawberries
● First grade- blueberries
● Second grade- tomatoes
● Third grade- green beans
● Fourth grade- lettuce
● Fifth grade- onions
● Sixth grade- basil and parsley
Research in Progress:
For the research to be completed, a community meeting still needs to tale place. Along with a garden drive, minor adjustments to curriculum and the garden needs to be planted. The surveys were able to be completed quickly, but to gather parents and members of the community will be more difficult. Exact time frames still have yet to be worked out and teacher volunteers as well.
To be Completed:
● Parent/Community Meeting- Beginning of April
● Garden Drive- Mid April
● Curriculum Adjustments- End of April
● Garden Planted- Beginning of May
All research is estimated to be completed by the beginning of May
Problems Encountered and Anticipated:
Gathering parents and members of the community I think will be a harder task than I anticipate. If not all parents are on board with the proposal, then the meeting will be pointless along with the garden drive. This proposal counts on other people to help out as well. This proposal needs the support of parents and the community to make it all possible. If all goes well at the meeting, then I think the garden drive will be just as successful. The students are excited to be trying something new, as long as parents support them, then implementing the garden will be a success.
Flyers will go home to students to inform parents of the dates of the meeting and garden drive. I think if the meeting is short and to the point, there will be many attendees. The garden drive will be completed on a weekend to hopefully bring more people out.
