Coursework Instructions:
Organizations, from time to time, must make hard decisions (expand, lay off employees, or close a facility). As a manager, you will have to use work experiences, advice from supervisors, and the organizational culture to support your decision. Organizational culture is the sum of the values and beliefs shared among employees.
Suppose you are a manager who is faced with having to reduce headcount (lay off one of your two employees) in your unit. Sales within the company have declined due to the downward spiral of the economy, and each department within the organization is faced with making the same decision. Fortunately, you only have to cut one job; others are reducing more.
Mary is in her mid-20s, single, and a college graduate. She is very hard-working and was in the top 10 percent of the performance ratings this year. She constantly volunteers to travel and work weekends and evenings. However, she supports political causes that could be viewed as contrary to the goals of the company.
Alice is in her mid-40s, has two young children, and is married to a doctor. Her performance is good, and she has above-average performance reviews. However, she has limited availability on weekends and limitations on overnight travel due to her volunteer work with local charities.
Respond to the following:
As a manager, who would you select to lay off and why?
What is the potential impact of this choice on organizational culture?
Second discussion question
Daniel Goleman, a psychologist, was the first to popularize the trait of emotional intelligence, sometimes referred to as EI. Emotional intelligence is a person's capacity to be aware of her or his emotions and feelings towards others to influence their thinking and actions. The four components of EI are:
Self-awareness: This is your ability to read your own emotions accurately to know how your actions or lack thereof affect others.
Self-management: This is your ability to control or regulate your emotions and act with integrity.
Social-awareness: This gives you the ability to understand the needs of others and show empathy towards them.
Relationship management: This is your ability to communicate clearly and convincingly, reduce conflict, and build strong bonds.
Respond to the following:
How has your emotional intelligence, or lack of emotional intelligence, positively or negatively impacted your professional or personal relationships?
Choose one of the components of EI and explain how it contributes to job satisfaction.

Question One
* As a manager, who would you select to lay off and why?
Mary and Alice have different strengths and weaknesses which makes it difficult to make a choice. However, given the circumstances, I would choose to lay off Mary. Alice's performance is good and has an above-average review. Since her limited availability on weekends and for overnight travel is due to family responsibilities and community involvement, this is still important for her as a person. I can consider exploring other options like discussing with Alice part-time or flexible arrangements to improve her availability. On the contrary, While Mary is hardworking, is among the top 10% of the performance ratings, and volunteers to travel and work on weekends and evenings, her political support for causes viewed contrary to the company is a deal breaker. Managing employees with diverse political views can pose several challenges for a business. When employees support political causes contrary to the company’s goal, this may create conflicts of interest (Hadi & Yulianti, 2019). Their advocacy, even though outside the work may be perceived as a potential for tension within the workplace. Mary’s political position may hence destabilize the team and make it challenging for other employees to work effectively towards the goals and objectives of the business. Moreover, if Mary's political position reaches the public, this may harm the company's reputation. The organization's brand image and customer trust may be eroded, causing the business significant losses.
* What is the potential impact of this choice on organizational culture?
The decision to lay off Mary because of her political affiliations can have various implications both positive and negative on the organizational culture. On the positive side, the decision can create an avenue for enhancing openness and in...
