Nike Ethical Issues
Nike's brand name is undoubtedly the most famous in the apparel industry. It is unfortunate that just like most global corporations, the company has faced and continues to face criticism on various issues related to business ethics. Most governments have laid out policies and protocols that individuals and corporations need to observe while undertaking their business operations within a particular jurisdiction. These corporations are also obligated to extend the moral principles that govern a person's ethics into their business to give rise to business ethics ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"XnO7GOo8","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Trevino & Nelson, 2016)","plainCitation":"(Trevino & Nelson, 2016)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":661,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/IBolxqVE/items/A3MMF2B4"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/IBolxqVE/items/A3MMF2B4"],"itemData":{"id":661,"type":"book","publisher":"John Wiley & Sons","source":"Google Scholar","title":"Managing business ethics: Straight talk about how to do it right","title-short":"Managing business ethics","author":[{"family":"Trevino","given":"Linda K."},{"family":"Nelson","given":"Katherine A."}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2016"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Trevino & Nelson, 2016). Also, other than pursuing their main goal which is to gain profit, corporations ought to put the interests of the society first to satisfy the requirements of corporate social responsibility (CSR) ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"PKaQ0Tj0","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Harrison et al., 2019)","plainCitation":"(Harrison et al., 2019)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":663,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/IBolxqVE/items/JW3XCPNF"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/IBolxqVE/items/JW3XCPNF"],"itemData":{"id":663,"type":"article-journal","container-title":"Journal of Product & Brand Management","note":"publisher: Emerald Publishing Limited","source":"Google Scholar","title":"Corporate social responsibility and business ethics: conceptualization, scale development and validation","title-short":"Corporate social responsibility and business ethics","author":[{"family":"Harrison","given":"Dana E."},{"family":"Ferrell","given":"O. On many occasions, Nike has in one way or another compromised obligations surrounding national laws, business ethics, and social responsibility.
Although Nike has done a tremendous job in ensuring corporate social responsibility, it has faced a lot of criticism on how it treats its workers in industries across Europe and the U.S., leave alone the third World countries. Nike's ethical behavior in the U.S. came under heavy criticism in 2018 when they stood in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick in the fight against racism ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"0KOy8QPd","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Spellings, 2018)","plainCitation":"(Spellings, 2018)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":669,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/IBolxqVE/items/ZY2TKL67"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/IBolxqVE/items/ZY2TKL67"],"itemData":{"id":669,"type":"webpage","abstract":"When will the brand pay its workers a living wage?","container-title":"The Cut","language":"en-us","note":"source: ","title":"The Next Step for the New, Socially Conscious Nike","URL":"/2018/09/nikes-colin-kaepernick-ad-raises-issues-of-workers-rights.html","author":[{"family":"Spellings","given":"Sarah"}],"accessed":{"date-parts":[["2020",5,26]]},"issued":{"date-parts":[["2018",9,6]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Spellings, 2018). This was a great move by Nike to be a socially responsible company. However, some reactions were rather negative, signaling that Nike had embarked on its old trait of being a sweatshop, especially to immigrants and people of color in its European and American industries.
CSR extends the responsibility of a firm to build a sustainable environment. Although Nike makes use of biodegradable organic materials such as cotton and polyester in their products, it heavily relies on synthetic materials which are hazardous. This poses a great risk to those working in the industry, those who use the products (shoes and truck suites), and also the environment as a whole.
