Primary sources refer to the original events, work, or materials that researchers use to obtain information about a specific research subject. They depict first-hand information and direct evidence that has not been interpreted or analyzed. In other terms, these sources have raw information, which when used appropriately can help researchers to address their research questions and hypotheses. Primary sources are crucial since they enable researchers to obtain data that has not been manipulated. Some examples of these types of sources include peer-reviewed journals, theses, interviews, speeches, experiments, and surveys.
Notably, secondary sources might include summaries, analyses, or reviews of the primary sources (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). They summarize the information that is already known. For example, a person might come across a specific primary source, such as a speech or interview. If the individual analyzes or summarizes the information in that speech, then the resulting material is a secondary source. In other words, secondary sources interpret, provide, or summarize a primary source.
