Accepting and Rejecting Hypothesis, Experimental Group, and Control Group
EXPERIMENT: Dr. Leon dePonce is a scientist who is interested in studying possible treatments to slow down aging. The question foremost in his mind: “Is there any food that can slow down the aging process?”. He observed that the state of Florida has an unusually high proportion of older people living there. He also observed that the per capita sale of prune juice is higher in Florida then in other states. He designs an experiment where he takes 200 laboratory mice of the same age, sex, and strain, and divides them into 2 groups of 100 mice each. Group 1 is fed standard mouse chow and receives tap water to drink. Group 2 is fed the same mouse chow, but receives prune juice to drink instead of water. He records the length of time that each mouse in the experiment lives. He finds that the mean life span of both groups of mice is 3 years. 1) In 1-2 sentences, state the hypothesis of Dr dePonce’s study (2 points). 2) Which is the experimental group and which is the control group in his study? (1 point) 3.) should the hypothesis be accepted or rejected based on his results, and why? (2 points)
