The Condition of Frescoes in the Room at Villa dei Papyri
Villa dei Papyri, also known as Villa dei Pisoni, was a villa in ancient Rome located in Herculaneum, now Ercolano in Southern Italy. It is named after ancient scrolls, papyri. The villa was thought to be the most glamorous and luxurious in ancient Rome. Its luxurious stature is indicated by it’s exquisite and unique architecture and by the numerous works of art constituted in its being. The works of art included marble sculptures, bronzes, and frescoes. The frescoes included Perseus slaying Medusa, Theseus victory over Minotaur, Chiron teaching the lyre to Achilles, a charioteer, the head of Medusa, and papyri. The condition of frescoes in the room at Villa dei Papyri in Herculaneum are in crisp condition. These artworks are still very clear and appealing. Although some seem broken and torn, they remain clear and appealing. The head of Medusa, fresco of the sacred landscape, fresco of the monochrome landscape, fresco of cupid holding a cup and a baton, and the head of Silenus are in crisp condition, which shows they have been well preserved.
All artworks in the room were fashioned on a plaster where pigments were added to it as it dried. These frescoes consisted of three coats of mortar and another three coats of marble mixed with lime. Alt...
