Symbolism of Lines, Color, and Subject of my Classmate’s Work
Painting 1 - Writing Project (companion to Assignment 2 critique)
During the discussion portion of the critique you will jot down talking points from which to develop an opinion and write about Project 2. You will write about how colour strengthens communication and how it, in relation to the subject matter, can provoke an emotional response from the viewer. Take into consideration your experience with your own painting, and, in contrast to the peer submission you have been assigned to evaluate, tap into how you observe and engage in order to highlight points of interest and develop your point of view.
Step 1. Look around the room to see which work(s) you respond to the most.
Of those works which ones stay true to the instructions given for this project: premixing a palette of colour made from combinations of two complementary colours plus white, utilization of anomaly colour (to feature a particular element or object in the interior space) and bridge tones (to assist with integrating the anomaly colour back into the unified colour scheme).
Take a picture and make notes on why this/these work(s) successfully engage you, the viewer.
Step 2. You have been assigned a name that corresponds with a painting. This will be the subject painting of your writing project.
You will compare this assigned painting to the paintings you respond to in Section 1. Also you will look to the work of Fairfield Porter, David Hockney, Keiran Brennan Hinton and others to support and inform the arguments you make for the work you are writing about.
Step 3. Pdf’s of writing examples will be posted on Slate. Of the three examples posted, the third piece of writing (by Gary Michael Dault) is the best example of descriptive writing. In it there are references to art history, artists, art movements, geography and various processes. Use this to help you develop ideas to establish a clear point of view and support your argument.
Step 4. Write a critique (no more than one-page text) of the work you have been assigned. Your descriptions and comparisons will help you articulate what is significant about painting to you. This will help identify what is important to you as an artist and hopefully make it easier for you to connect with studio projects in terms of personal expression. It should also help you write about your own work when you apply for art opportunities and/or work/study positions in the Art and Art History programme.
Step 5. Back-up your writing with jpeg examples pasted into your document. Take some pictures during the critique.

Art CritiqueExamining the symbolism of Lines,Color and Subject of my Classmate’s work
