Exhibition to Create Sustainability Awareness

Coursework Instructions:

The point of this final assignment is to begin to put the theory you’ve learnt and your perspective of the discursive landscape you’ve encountered through this course to use.

The best proposals will demonstrate an awareness of the curatorial stakes and urgencies that inform the project (exhibition, public programmes, publication etc.) that is being suggested.

Thus for this assignment you will need to submit:

A: 100 word summary of the proposed project - this is a short elevator pitch of your project, include information like the site of the exhibition, the type of material on show and a succinct declaration of the project’s purpose

B: A detailed statement about the concept of the exhibition/project (no longer than 500 words) - this should explain the curatorial stakes and urgency of the project. What is the purpose of the exhibition/project? What is it responding to in the curatorial field? How are artefacts, artworks or artistic practices being used to make this case? Make a compelling case for why the specific material you’ve chosen is important to illustrate your idea. How do the different objects in your project or exhibition relate to one another?

C: A list of proposed artists and short bios with images of the artworks

D: A completed budget worksheet (don’t worry – this is the least important part for this assignment!!!)

E: (Optional)You may submit a short essay employing texts from the course to further elaborate upon your detailed statement by explaining the curatorial stakes of your project and how you define curatorial practice. Clearly describe the exhibition layout: how will your target audience experience the artwork? Why is this important? (no longer than 1000 words)

Summary of the Proposed Project
The project focuses on creating sustainability awareness through the lenses of three artists; John Clang, David Goldstein, and Renhui. The exhibition draws attention to how cities can become green by incorporating trees and other aspects of nature. The project will educate the viewers on the essence of planting trees in the cities. The exhibition will take place at the Chapel Gallery and the Objectifs courtyard. The material displayed will be in the form of photos. A total of 12 images will be exhibited, three (3) from each artist. The exhibition will bring together artists from Singapore and other countries with a common goal of demonstrating contemporary urbanization.
Concept of Exhibition
The promise of employment opportunities and prosperity has pulled more people into cities. Currently, more than half of the world’s population resides in cities, and by 2050, two-thirds of the world’s individuals are expected to live in cities (UN, 2018). The increase in urban population has increased the demand for more housing units, hence clearing forests to create more room for buildings. The tiny space has caused developers to omit trees in urban areas. The decrease in the number of trees in cities means that urban areas are unsustainable. Considering their sustainability as cities grow because of future generations is crucial.
The exhibition raises awareness among the public and city planners on the need to ensure that cities are sustainable. It calls upon Singapore and other cities to be sensitive when designing and planning for city structures. Exhibiting photos is a strategic way of capturing the attention of the attendants. The viewers will be exposed to the realities of cities from the different photos. A text will accompany the images to offer more details about the photos. This will be critical in helping the audience understand the meaning of the images. While the works are from different artists, they all have a common goal of promoting urban sustainability. The works have been selected carefully to reflect an aspect of urban sustainability. Different artists will provide different perspectives on how people can implement urban sustainability.
A curator talk will be held with a panel of some artists. Tan Siuli, the curator, will demonstrate why the particular artists and their works were chosen and how they relate to urban sustainability. Siuli is an experienced curator and will use her extensive experience to address any issues from the audience. Lastly, a panel talk with the artists will be held to provide more insight into their works and their connection to urban sustainability. The artists will provide more details on why they have chosen to use their art to promote sustainability.
