Case study for a patient with an INFJ Personality
Subjective –
The patient is a 20-year-old Hispanic male, brought into the clinic today by his 36-year-old mother. Patient was a college student at a Community College and the breadwinner of his two siblings. Patient said that he lost her scholarship because of the university cutting its cost, and have recently offered a job as a sales clerk in a new shopping mall. Her mother – B. L. – is a colleague of the clinician who referred her to the clinic because of the fatigue and feeling of restlessness that he experiences after work. The patient reported that he prefers quiet places and most of the time he feels “weak†whenever he’s in a crowded place. Regarding her goals in life and her focus on them, he said that:
“I don’t usually think of living in the moment. Even if I want to, my mind keeps thinking of how would my actions affect my future?â€â€¦ “I took the job for two main reasons… For one, I need to finance my and my sibling’s schooling, and I also don’t want others to see me as incompetent and worthless. A lot of people these days judge you even if they don’t know what you’re going through.â€
B.L. reported that one of the distinguishing characteristics of her daughter is her way of always thinking about others and how do her actions affect how everyone works with one another. B.L. also said how her son becomes “a little bit irritated when the plan goes not as how it’s supposed to be.â€
Objective –
Patient showed signs of expending energy when socializing with a large group of people through the MBTI test. Other results of the test states that the patient prefers; (1) an objective focus on the future and the general picture; (2) consideration of the social implications of an act or an idea; and (3) a high preference on “predictable situations†as compared to others.
Assessment –
Based on the MBTI test results, the patient’s personality is categorized as INFJ (Introversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Judging) personality. Personality types like these are designed for expressive careers and those that would help them connect with others in a holistic manner. Thus, her feeling of fatigue and restlessness is because of his work as a clerk that requires her to socialize with a multitude of people. This then is the reason for her constant feeling of fatigue and restlessness.
Plan –
Patient is advised to attend career individual counseling sessions at least once every week for the next four weeks. Counseling sessions to help him figure out what job is best for her personality in consideration of what jobs are available should be thoroughly addressed. At the same time, the patient’s goals and current stress levels should be checked every counseling session. Lastly, the patient’s issues on social matters, self-image, and family matters in connection with her current job should be dealt with thoroughly during the succeeding counseling sessions. Group career counseling sessions are also highly advised, and ongoing sessions for this are held every Friday.
Patient’s psychosocial history
Baltung is a 20-year old male, a brother and breadwinner of two siblings, who is working as a fashion store sales clerk in a newly opened shopping mall. He said that he is experiencing chronic fatigue and a constant feeling of restlessness ever since he started his work. Baltung stated that he does not feel the same way during his previous part-time work as a librarian in a local community college. During that time, he reported that he “feels like he still has a lot of energy†to visit her mother and tend to his siblings after his library work. Now, he stated that he feels as if he just want to go home and sleep the “whole day off after the shift.â€
Family Issues
Baltung’s relationship with her mother was well before this occurrence. He even said that they usually go out over the weekend and visit the local park. During the past few months since he had this issue, her mother was diagnosed with stage-4 ovarian cancer. That made her visits much more often. However, Baltung stated that because of his mother’s lack of money to fund for her hospitalization, he accepted the post as a sales clerk.
Baltung also has two siblings both of whom are in high school. One is a freshman and the other a senior high. During the interview, he stated; “Being the brother and the breadwinner of my two siblings, I have to provide for all of their need myself. I just can’t afford not to have a job… [And] that’s why I took the post as a sales clerk.†He added that because of his past actions, he thinks that he is less empathetic with his siblings and that he starts having fears that “they would drif...
