The experience of disability is relevant to our world because ALL people regardless of race, ethnic background, language, culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, size, shape, and geographical location are impacted by disabilities directly and/or indirectly. Key Point #1: The transformative power of community and affirming spaces for marginalized groups The transformative power of community and creating affirming spaces for marginalized groups is a central theme in “Crip Camp” that profoundly resonates with current social justice movements. Camp Jened provided a rare environment where people with disabilities could freely express themselves, build authentic community connections, and experience a profound sense of normalcy that was so often denied to them in the outside world. The camp’s spirit of allegiance to the hippie culture and the counselors’ radical acceptance of campers as complete, self-sufficient individuals, not just patients or diagnoses, created an atmosphere of empowerment. Attendees would be liberated from the shackles of prejudice, restrictions, and impersonal attitudes, which are often the attributes of mainstream society due to their impairments (Netflix, 2020). This fostering of self-respect and the normalization of disability as one of the many attributes of the human race, not a shameful deviation, worked out to be a game changer. In camp, nobody had to be the odd one out because of their disability. All were equal, and there was no point in othering or pitying. Their disabilities did not define them, and they could make deep and meaningful connections with others based on shared experiences (Netflix, 2020). It stimulated the revolutionary awareness among them that their struggles and inability to access were not due to their lapses but systemic prejudices and exclusion, which are imbued into an ableist society.
