Case 2: Wanxiang Group: A Chinese Company’s Global Strategy
1.Is Wanxiang a differentiator or a cost leader? What is the source of Wanxiang’s competitive advantage?
2.What value does the Wanxiang Group add to the U.S. companies? Why doesn’t Wanxiang more fully integrate the U.S. companies in order to achieve economies of scale?
3.Why doesn’t Wanxiang just shift production to China? What risks does Wanxiang incur by keeping production in the U.S.?
These are individual assignments. Students should write these cases completely independent of other students in the class. Secondary sources, however, can be used and should be properly cited. (See the discussion on citations above.) Students should answer the questions indicated for the case on the syllabus. The write-ups should be no more than two pages double-spaced. Grading will be based both on content and writing composition (see Rubric for Case Write-Ups at the end of the syllabus). Write-ups must be uploaded by 2 pm on the date the cases are first discussed.

Michael Porter, a Harvard professor and a renowned author, proposed strategies that organizations can utilize to realize their competitiveness in an industry sector: cost leadership and differentiation (Ali and Anwar 42). In the case of Wanxiang Group, the strategic method deployed from the beginning has mainly focused on quality and talent to differentiate itself from others, thus identifying itself as a differentiator (Abrami et al., 4). The competitiveness of Wanxiang can be attributed to its major focus on talented human capital and its investment in quality products to help it differentiate itself from other global industry players.
