Workplace violence refers to any violent act or threat of physical harm against employees in a workplace. It can include verbal abuse, physical assault, or even homicide. It can occur between employees or between employees and customers, clients, or visitors. Workplace bullying, on the other hand, refers to repeated and persistent mistreatment, whether physical or psychological, of one employee by another or others (Nauman et al., 2019). It can include spreading rumors, withholding information or resources, or verbal abuse. The critical difference between the two is that workplace violence typically involves a physical threat or harm, while workplace bullying may not necessarily involve physical harm.
In the case of the Houghton Refrigeration Company, there are examples of workplace violence and bullying. Joe Gleason, the first-line supervisor in the press room, regularly belittles and humiliates college students whenever they make mistakes. This behavior can be considered workplace bullying as persistent mistreatment and psychological abuse of these students.
