Challenges Managers Face in the Global Workforce

Case Study Instructions:

A final paper of 10 pages long, with three choices as topics:

A. Case study of any chapter

B. Cross cultural research on any topic of interest

C. Application of cross-cultural research from current news.

So I would suggest, if possible, a continuation on what you presented in class, but you may also explore more areas of expertise. Whatever you believe you will need in your future work life should be your main focus.

To further clarify, since this assignment is due rather quickly, I would highly recommend that you share your opinion and perspective about topics you have encountered rather than doing a lot of research. I have added more key resources to Week #9's Module so that you can utilize the research already available.

If you see connections between your ideas and other ideas in the book or other ideas from your colleagues, you can mention them and try to stitch all the threads together. Once you know the methodology of the best practices, you will find that the best research in Cross-Cultural studies is observational and analytical. Qualitative research requires in-depth study and there are no right or wrong answers. They do, however, need to be based on current and observable methodologies that synchronize with terms and concepts offered up in this class, as well as those in other professors and books which deal with this subject.

Therefore, I hope you enjoy writing this paper and sharing your interests. As I mentioned at the top, the best thing to work on is something you will need in your future line of work. Share your thoughts of connecting dots, or something you read in the paper which triggered your interest, or a comment from one of your colleague's presentation and expand upon it.

I hope you enjoy writing this paper. Any perspective on the subjects in this class are welcome. You have been a very thoughtful and kind group of students, and I truly appreciate your participation.

Challenges Managers Face in the Global Workforce
Executive Summary/Synopsis
As a result of globalization, the workforce has continuously turned into one of the most cross-cultural places ever. Due to the diverse cultural dynamics, there has been a growing concern for individuals in the management position to accurately tackle the various problems arising in this highly multicultural environment. The significant demographical changes in the US have made it easy to notice the drastic shift in the workplace. To date, it is not uncommon to walk into an organization and find people of different races, ethnic groups, and sexual orientations working for the common agenda in the organization. However, despite the diverse cultural system within these organizations, there exist problems in communication at the management level which can never be underestimated. Therefore, the purpose of this case study is to address the communication challenges that managers face in executing their daily routines. On a more in-depth level, this case study seeks to reveal the findings and thoroughly discuss the obstacles such as language barriers, attitude variations, stereotyping, and diversity in behaviors and various solutions in an organization set up while giving practical recommendations on dealing with such.
Introduction/ Findings
Throughout history, communication has been one of the biggest menaces that companies and big business organizations face. As a form of exchanging information between two or more people (Economist, 2021), communication also remains the most crucial aspect that managers tackle. The contemporary workplace has been flooded with many workers from different diversities, making the workforce one of the most multicultural places in the world. As a result of globalization and the rise of the digital literacy level, managers have had to deal with employees having different origins in terms of nationalities, races, and employees who view things differently from other people.
Hence, this case study will focus much on items dealing with cross-cultural communication and management in the global workforce and highlights some of the problems workers face. Indeed, a cross-cultural issue is a trend that has emerged due to workplace diversity (Hofstede, n.d) and is a task that has gained much importance in the world. For a very long time, managers have recruited many people to make their business move with much ease, only to realize there is communication in the process, thus making the business's daily operations a challenge (Economist, 2021). Also, with a firm recruiting more people, the ability to work and manage a cross-cultural organization remains a crucial matter to most managers as a shallow misunderstanding of such sensitive concepts may lead to the business closing down or leading to a sharp decline in the daily sales and consequently lose the customer's base it had established.
Further, this case study paper will focus on the contemporary issues that managers and leaders face in the daily routine and running of the affairs of the organization and communication issues that affect the ways employees interact with the management. The case study will also highlight some of the conclusive reasons behind a cross-cultural environment. On a more specific note, the paper will further clarify some of the related problems that individuals face in these types of organizations provides a more in-depth analysis using real contemporary issues in such institutions to scrutinize the above matters in a more elaborated sense. The overall road map of this case study will hence focus on the following:
1 Cross-cultural communication
2 Problems in a cross-cultural organization
3 How cross-cultural affects workers
4 Solutions to the problems encountered in a cross-cultural organization
5 Implementations that are recommended for a cross-cultural organization
Discussion/ Analysis
In the contemporary workplace, employees have diverse cultural backgrounds that affect their patterns of ideals and the way they think. This case study hence scrutinizes the way employees are involved in the way they converse. The diverse nature of any organization should instill teamwork, but this is not the reality in most places. Cross-cultural organizations face a significant hindrance in communication, making people confused in their daily endeavors. The major problems and challenges managers face in the cross-cultural workforce include the following:
Diversity in Behaviors
In every organization, employee behavior is a necessary form of communication. Most often, behavior dictates the way that people would tend to communicate. In a workforce place, workers do not know what they need, making it challenging for managers to help them in this category (Economist, 2021). Further, Behavioral difference in organizations presents a significant challenge encountered by managers in a workforce environment. The discerning of employees and how they view the people who manage them interfere significantly affects the behavioral patterns. Also, individuals who have dominant behavioral issues are prone to stick to their lanes, thus challenging the managers who are supposed to lead them in the right way. Hence, behavior communication affects the individual's expression of freedom and needs in a more profound sense. Instead of adopting a line of communication pattern that is open, managers face big crises in managing people who experience such dominant behavioral patterns.
Solution
To help with behavioral patterns in the organization, managers must know the kind of workers they are dealing with. A more comprehensive understanding asserts that managers should understand the diversity of the employees they have. Also, managers can motivate the workers and consequently instill the confidence they need.
Language Barriers
Another problem encountered by managers is the language barrier. In a cross-cultural workplace, workers may use complex words, thus impeding the comprehension of ideas. In an organization set up, when communication occurs, a business partner can feel excluded in the way things happen, and a sense of isolation will creep in. The business enterprise is affected by this problem. Some employees resent and completely withdraw their level of involvement from work, consequently affecting the nature of the organization's management and profit-making. According to studies, an excellent example of language barriers is a dialect (Hofstede, n.d). In a cross-cultural workplace that has been necessitated by globalization, workers were found to be speaking one language, but the diversity in dialects presents a hindrance. Moreover, the communication breakdown can be a result of the accent and fluency of individuals. According to research, fluency and pronunciation strongly affect communication in an organization as it creates a potential for lack of understanding (Hofstede, n.d). Language is needed for communication to be processed in a more organized way, and thus when communication happens so fast, people feel left out, causing a hindrance to communication.
Solution
In this case study, various solutions were highlighted as the language barrier is concerned. It was suggested that managers use plain language. According to studies, it was observed that flamboyancy in language use and excessive use of slang made it very difficult for people to interact effectively in the business setup (Economist, 2021). Also, in a cross-cultural organization, providing classes for the worker would be very helpful in overcoming language barriers. As a result of globalization, people need to move to a new geographical location. When globalization creeps into a workforce, it becomes prudent for the organization to give workers ...
