Case studies can be used in any academic discipline. The purpose of a case study is to provide a more thorough analysis of a situation or "case" which might reveal interesting information about that classification of things. For a sport industry student, a case often pertains to university sport, media, and sports organizations. Case studies could be written about individuals, such as high profile athletes, for example, about organizations such as the NCAA and their management practices, or about practices in sport such as the ethics of gender verification and/or doping and performance enhancement.
A case study is an analytical piece. It involves in-depth research and application of theories, concepts, and knowledge commonly discussed in the field of study. It highlights common problems in the field and will illuminate those problems through the in-depth study of its application to one individual, one organization, one government, or one of the subjects that are being studied. Most case studies are an attempt to solve one of these problems that are known in the field.
Steps to Writing the Case Study:
**PAPER:
1. Determine what your Case Study will be about. Think about the problems we have discussed in class, those you have identified in your reading, or contemporary current events in sport. What is the ethical dilemma or dilemmas posed in this case study?
2. Begin by researching at the library and/or online in order to identify a specific problem. Once you have identified a problem, read as much as you can about it in books, journals, magazines, newspapers, etc. Take notes and remember to keep track of the sources for later citations in the case study.
3. Analyze the information. What cultural and social issues should be addressed? Do these pertain to matters of sport and society? Where so? How so?
4. Write the case study. The case study should have the following sections:Note: There is not a page (minimum or maximum) here however, with this being the comprehensive project for the course the quality and depth included (should reflect such.)

Sports Betting
Introduction
Sports betting has revealed many moral issues within the industry. Issues of competition fairness, athlete exploitation, and social consequences of easy access to gambling are growing faster as the line between sports and gambling is becoming blurry (Bowles & McGee, 2023). The profound over-commercialization of sports and the complete normalization of sports betting are problems that require urgent solutions. Such issues include professional athletes sharing inside information with sports betting companies and constant gambling advertisements during sports broadcasting. This case study will provide a deeper understanding of unethical cases in sports betting, citing the example of Jontay Porter and Raptors, thus understanding how unethical decisions can be addressed, the effects on layers and sports organizations, and a guide to developing an ethical culture in sports betting.
Background
The case of Jontay Porter with the Toronto Raptors is based on the collision of professional basketball and the fast-growing sports betting market. Ethical questions arose when Jontay Porter, a promising junior player, leaked the injury data to a sport betting company, thus putting himself at the center of the controversy (Schiffer, 2024). The exposure of this issue created moral dilemmas regarding the sport's validity and the players' responsibility when such activities are conducted for money. Sports gambling aims to provide a fair chance to all people, but with the leakage of such information, it would be easy to predict the game outcomes.
With the status of being one of the most prominent franchises in the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Raptors of Toronto turned out to be the most vulnerable to the protests. The team had to go through an inconvenient process of addressing the problem of one of the players’ possible involvements in the activity, which could compromise the integrity of the game and cause reputation and legal issues for the team (Schiffer, 2024). Notably, it highlighted challenges facing the commercial aspects of sports, such as businesses that are betting on sports. Thus, it underlines the need for solid regulations to protect athletes’ health and maintain the integrity of competitions. The case is special due to a player’s involvement in the unethical case of information sharing. This makes it a good sample for the larger population due to lessons on the team to be cautious about information protection and not getting into the wrong hands.
Identification of Principal Issues/Problems/Questions
This entire case focuses on multiple substantial issues and moral dilemmas related to sports betting. The integrity of the sporting competition is the primary and most significant challenge (Mravec, 2021). There was a concern about the possibility of game or betting outcome manipulation after it was leaked that Jontay Porter was telling a sports betting organization about his athletes' injuries. This behavior creates a climate of distrust in which viewers and stakeholders think that competitions are unfair, undermining the credibility o...
