It causes episodic vasospasms that restrict blood flow. These episodes are likely triggered by emotional stress or cold temperatures, which could cause significant discomfort. This case concerns a 35-year-old female patient diagnosed with Raynaud's syndrome. The patient has recorded that she is experiencing frequent episodes of toe and finger discoloration, pain, and numbness, mostly during cold environments. Even though the patient has not recorded any history of autoimmune disorders, she has mild hypertension, which she has been managing with amlodipine, which is a calcium channel blocker. Her main concern is the functional impairment and severe discomfort that she suffers during Raynaud's attacks. The main reason is that they affect her ability to perform daily activities. Treating her as a nurse, I will prevent her from suffering from severe complications such as infections or ulcers by focusing on symptom management, lifestyle modifications, and symptom management. This paper will explore the pathogenesis of the disease, the patient's medical history, the nursing assessment, current treatment options, and the nursing interventions that will boost the patient's quality of life. Pathogenesis Raynaud’s syndrome is classified into primary Raynaud’s disease and secondary Raynaud’s phenomenon. Primary Raynaud is idiopathic and occurs without any underlying condition, while secondary Raynaud results from diseases such as scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or rheumatoid arthritis. Raynaud's syndrome has an exaggerated vasoconstrictive response to stress or cold. The main reason is the over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system (Lindberg et al., 2021). This condition can cause a decrease in the blood flow to the affected extremities. This would cause hypoxia (blue discoloration), ischemia (white discoloration), and reperfusion hyperemia (red discoloration) after the blood restoration. If there are repeated vasospasms during severe cases, they could cause the person to experience permanent gangrene, digital ulcers, or tissue necrosis. History The patient has been experiencing Raynaud's symptoms for two years. As time has progressed, the episodes have become more frequent and severe. Even though she does not have any autoimmune disorders, she has a history of hypertension. She takes amlodipine, which takes 5 mg daily to control her blood pressure (Khan et al., 2020). This drug has helped to reduce Raynaud's symptoms to a certain degree since it has vasodilatory effects.
