Cultural Knowledge in Classroom Integration
A visit to a family house with a young child revealed the deep cultural understanding and life experiences that the child and family members contributed to every conversation. The Mexican heritage of the family became apparent through their social practices, which incorporated their native language and purposeful cultural activities. What stood out most was how the child effortlessly shifted between English and Spanish while choosing between languages based on the communication situation. Gonzalez et al. (2007) establish that bilingualism contains cultural values teachers can use to support classroom learning for children and their peers by integrating lived experiences with academic content. According to this view, the educational setting needs to recognize and value multilingualism as a valuable asset, not a challenge.
What made the experience remarkable was the extensive agricultural knowledge displayed by the child. The backyard garden of their home had vegetables like tomatoes and peppers, which they cultivated along with herbs. The child participated in every garden task, including seed planting and plant watering activities. Participating hands-on in garden activities gave the child ecological knowledge about plants and soil and basic economic understanding because, occasionally, their family sold vegetables at a local market. Such findings proved unexpected because they demonstrated how students learn substantial content from regular household activities, which traditional schooling frequently disregards. Moll et al. (2001) show that “funds of knowledge” are essential tools that establish meaningful links between students’ home environment and their education to help teachers recognize the worth of practical knowledge. Teachers create more meaningful learning experiences for students by accepting and adding daily experiences to classroom content.
During the visit, I learned that children’s knowledge could substantially benefit school environments. The multilingual capabilities of the child provide school teachers with educational support to strengthen language arts instruction focused on English language learning (ELL) students. The peer mentor role for the child would benefit learners by supporting their movement through language fluency and cultural adjustment. The child’s agricultural expertise should integrate with the scientific curriculum, especially during plant biology and environmental science unit lessons.
