The concept of globalization as “second modernity” can be used to analyze society. The concept recognizes that globalization has changed the way people see the world. In the past, countries were more nationalistic in their approach to issues. They did not consider the actions of other countries as very critical. However, as nations collaborated more, they realized they all lacked something that others could provide. For instance, in trade, some countries have an advantage in producing certain products, while others can provide the market. Globalization has brought the world together as nations are more aware that their actions have consequences on the whole globe. Hence, countries need to be responsible for their actions. People in the globalized world have a lot to gain. They have access to opportunities in different parts of the world. For instance, a business can discover a market for its products in another continent and get its products delivered.
This analysis majors on a conceptual approach of globalization as “second modernity” in the analysis of Tinder, a dating site. Since its founding, Tinder has become a popular dating site. While there are other dating sites, Tinder has grown to become a household name. It has become a destination for young people, especially in college, who want to date. Users create a profile, providing personal details like gender, location, age, and other required information (Tinder, 2022). Once the process is complete, users can start swiping through the numerous profiles. The profiles come with a photo and a small biography. If users dislike a profile, they swipe left while right if they like them. Users can filter their search to get the description of the people they want. Once two people agree, they can start a conversation via the application. Here, they get to know each other better and engage more. Through the platform, people can develop long-lasting relationships. Some people have ended up getting marriage partners.

Gone are when people needed to meet physically to start long-lasting relationships. Technological advancement has allowed the creation of websites and mobile applications, allowing people to meet and start dating. One of the most popular dating sites is Tinder. Founded ten years ago, Tinder has proceeded to become a popular dating site. It has over 75 million active users and contributes to about 1.5 million dates weekly (Tinder, 2022). Tinder is the place to go and find a suitable dating partner for the newer generation. Tinder has transformed dating in a variety of ways. Firstly, it has allowed people to find love in their comfort without sacrificing time for work or leisure. People can access a database of singles without the necessity of meeting them in person. Secondly, Tinder has been critical in integrating people with diverse needs. Tinder allows people to choose a wide range of partners who can meet their diverse needs. Individuals can filter the kind of partners they want and get relevant results.
Furthermore, Tinder has been instrumental in enhancing cross boarder and interracial relationships. The site leverages location technologies to help people decide where to get partners. It is possible to get a partner from another country. Tinder provides an effective platform for individuals looking for love outside their circles where they can express their diverse needs. The sire encourages young people to break physical and mental barriers and get partners outside their immediate circles. Some of the connections end up in marriage, hence enabling people to explore other parts of the globe. Such a move is instrumental in addressing the ethnic challenges facing the modern world. Additionally, Tinder is a platform where people can meet individuals who can connect them to opportunities. What may start as dating may become an opportunity for doing business and getting employment. As people interact, they discover more about each other which can lead to deeper connections that can help young people in the future.
Tinder demonstrates how technology can physically distance and bring together people with similar needs and interests. The advancements in technology have permitted individuals to have a global mindset. In the past, it was challenging for people from different nationalities to date unless they were nearby. However, internet connectivity and the penetration of computers and mobile devices have allowed more people to take advantage of the online space (Correa, Pavez & Contreras, 2020). In the same way, people can order products online, Tinder allows them to form relationships, some leading to marriage. Individuals are more open-minded in their approach to dating, which allows them to meet people from different parts of the world. Indeed, Tinder has revolutionized dating and placed it in the context of the digital world. It is hard to imagine a world without Tinder since this would mean people cannot easily meet partners. The success of Tinder and other dating sites is a testimony to how people are willing to use digital technologies to break barriers and meet new people.
The Conceptual Issue
The conceptual issue under focus is “globalization as ‘second modernity.’” An understanding of the concept starts with an insight into the two terms; globalization and second modernity. Globalization refers to the interconnectedness of countries (Surugiu & Surugiu, 2015). Gone are the days when nations existed in isolation. In today’s world, nations are interconnected to one such that the situation in one country affects many others. Globalization connects different parts of the world, expanding cultural, economic, and political activities. For instance, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to a spike in crude oil (Alam et al., 2022). The attack has affected the oil supply from Russia since the West has introduced financial sanctions that make it challenging to clear Russian oil transactions via Western financial institutions.
Regarding second modernity, German sociologist Ulrich Beck coined the phrase to imply the period after modernity. Modernity transformed an agricultural society into an industrial one. It led to a shift from dependence on agriculture for survival and enabled society to embrace manufacturing. The second modernity seeks to transform the industrial society into a more reflexive network society (Rasborg, 2012). In the second modernity era, information drives society. Hence, “globalization as ‘second modernity’” implies how globalization acts as a catalyst for the transformation of society to a more networked space. The concept is instrumental, considering that digital technologies have advanced. Currently, individuals can communicate with anyone in any part of the world, thanks to the power of the Internet. Globalization is bringing the world together where people can work together, even miles apart. As a result, globalization is helping the world move towards a more information-dependent society. In such a world, data and information play a major role in determining how people interact.
