Thoughts of “The Power of Positive Thinking”
Introduction
Norman Vincent Peale’s book, The Power of Positive Thinking, is an excellent depiction of the inner strength possessed by human beings and that which they can use to overcome various life challenges to lead happy and peaceful lives devoid of frustrations or disappointments. The book further provides an effective framework for imparting positive attitudes on members of a given organization in seeking to increase the productivity of the employees while also promoting job satisfaction. Provided herein is a highlight of thoughts from Norman’s book and its application towards the implementation of the essentials or principles of effective organizational behavior as outlined in Robbins and Judge’s 13th edition publication, Essentials of Organizational Behavior.
Thoughts of Norman Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking
Norman Peale takes a spiritual approach from his experiences as an ordained member of the clergy with the various interactions with members of his flock as they seek for ways to achieve or rather lead happy and peaceful lives. The author was born in the year 1898 at Bowersville in Ohio, where he grew up and gained his education up to the college level upon. The renowned writer and motivational speaker would later join a theology school at Boston University where he was ordained on completing the course study in 1922 at the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was his work with the newspaper firms back in Ohio that perhaps introduced to writing as he even went ahead to partner with his wife to launch a magazine titled the Guideposts in 1945. However, his great motivational pieces such as The Power of Positive Thoughts show a strong correlation with staunch Christian faith and belief in the existence of a higher power upon which people can depend for actualizing their dreams and desires.
The Power of Positive Thinking builds around the author’s strong belief in the power of faith as reflects the main theme of the book, which states that one’s faith in themselves is the key to unveiling the happening of good things in one’s life CITATION Pea15 \l 1033 (Peale). The book reiterates on the fact that self-belief forms around people’s unwavering confidence in their abilities to overcome personal and life challenges through faith. The book takes a perceived religious or spiritual approach, which may mislead some of the readers into brushing it away as a religious book. Far from the misleading perception, however, is a gem for enhancing individual self-esteem and nurturing positive attitudes as the cornerstone for succeeding in all that a person chooses to do in life. The book further relates to the author’s life experiences as he was a victim of low esteem and confidence in the self, which led him astray from achieving or reaching out for that which he desired to acquire in his early adult life CITATION Pea15 \l 1033 (Peale). Being a preacher and a faithful Christian Norman used his experiences as a framework for instilling both the biblical teachings and psychological manifestation of lack of self-belief and its adverse effects on the quest of human happiness and success in life CITATION Pea15 \l 1033 (Peale). The book further highlights the power of prayer as being an essential factor in achieving the outlined outcomes in people’s lives.
Several thoughts come out from reading the highly motivating book, which forms an excellent platform for analyzing the viability of applying the book’s theme and teachings in working situations or business environments. Among the identifiable thoughts or key takeaways from the book include:
* The mind holds the key to success and happiness in life.
* Self-belief or believing in oneself is essential for developing a person’s confidence and positive perception of set goals.
* A person’s attitude plays a significant role in how their lives’ overall outcomes.
* A renewed perception of a life without worries is possible and a determinant factor in a person’s happiness in life.
* Constant and devoted prayers about what a person desires lead to its realization in life.
Norman Vincent Peale believes that the mind is the cornerstone for reducing negative attitudes by replacing the negative emotions with the more powerful sensations of positive thinking CITATION Pea15 \l 1033 (Peale). The confidence of an individual is also dependent on their ability to believe in themselves, which Norman defines as the ability to experience the fulfillment of the self in whatever situation or circumstances a person faces. Fulfilling oneself in any given situation refers to embracing the strength to overcome fears or anxiety when presented with new or foreign situations unto which they are supposed to bring out their best. A case in point would take a recruit’s first day at work where they may have to depend on the actualization of their true selves to overcome the challenges of anxiety and fear of failure or not meeting the expectations. Succumbing to the negative emotions may deter the recruit from reaching full potential and productivity at work due to lack or failure to express their inner selves at their places of work.
