In Dreams Begin Responsibilities, the story takes the form of a film set in the past; thus, the narrator is viewing it in the future. The story brings the idea of a man being in control of relationships with a woman, which was a cultural norm at the time. For example, the narrator's father chooses the restaurants, orders the dinner, and steers them to Coney Island amusements while the woman only gets along with the ideas. The relationship between prospect in-laws is demonstrated. For example, the narrator's dad is in an uncomfortable but reverential relationship with the woman's family, typical of a man pursuing a young woman (Schwartz).
