John Green is a YouTube content creator and author who is renowned for the book The fault in Our Stars (2012). His first novel was titled Alaska, while The Fault in Our Stars is his sixth book. The book also has a film adaptation that was released in 2014. Green was born in 1977, and he enrolled at the Chicago Divinity School for his university education to become an Episcopalian Minister. He served as a student chaplain, which allowed him to work at a local hospital for terminally ill children and youths. It was influential since it forced him to rethink his career in pursuing the ministry and instead, he chose to focus on fictional writing. It was also the reason why he published The Fault in Our Start which is intended for an audience of young adults and teens.
Summary
The novel focuses on Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 17year old girl diagnosed with cancer who is convinced by her mother to participate in a support group for cancer patients. During the meetings, she comes across Augustus Waters, who is also attending the sessions with his friend, Isaac who recently had surgery to remove an eye tumor, and he is also due for another operation to remove his second eye (Green 2012). Hazel has thyroid cancer, which is spreading to her lungs. Augusts is also recovering to osteosarcoma, which resulted in one of his legs being amputated. They even decide to read each other’s preferred books and Hazel picks Imperial Affliction while Augustus recommends The Price of Dawn. In the book, Amsterdam represents a counterpoint to Indianapolis since most of the time is spent in the new locations. Indianapolis acts as a representation of cancer treatment and everyday life which limits Hazel’s activities. On the other hand, Amsterdam represents the protagonist’s freedom. The context and history of the city serve to reveal its importance to Hazel.
