Abstract
Hepatitis B virus is a critical public health pathogen worldwide that causes acute and chronic liver diseases, significantly contributing to the global burden due to morbidity and mortality. In spite of advances in vaccination and antiviral therapy, more than 296 million people suffer from chronic hepatitis B infection and have an increased risk of developing severe complications of the liver (Al-Busafi & Alwassief 2024). Therefore, robust infection prevention and control measures will be required to reduce transmission and manage disease outcomes in the face of this resilient global health challenge.
Prevention Strategies
Universal HBV vaccination, especially at birth, remains the most effective way of preventing HBV infection. Despite its effectiveness, however, global coverage is variable and is estimated to be only 46% for vaccination given at birth (Al-Busafi & Alwassief 2024). Comprehensive vaccination programs, encompassing routine childhood immunization and catch-up campaigns targeting older children and adults, are needed to bring down HBV transmission, allowing the WHO's 2030 target of eliminating the infection to be met. Healthcare infrastructure must be strengthened in areas with low vaccination coverage to make vaccines available.
