Any communication device that uses the internet is allocated a distinct internet protocol (IP) address (Céspedes, Shen & Lazo, 2011). IP do specify the format of datagrams, commonly known as packets, and addressing scheme. It acts like a postal system by allowing the user to address the package and post it on the system. The IP addresses are also used in the identification of the device used in sending and receiving information (Céspedes, Shen & Lazo, 2011). Currently, there are a total of two IP addresses; IPv4 and IPv6. The two versions differ primarily in the length of their bits so that IPv4 has 32 bits and IPv6 128 bits (Céspedes, Shen & Lazo, 2011). There should be unique public IP addresses allocated by an internet service provider (ISP) for any IP addresses employed in communication over the internet.
The main future challenge that is likely to befall IPv6 is the security holes that are likely to pop up in various organizations using this protocol (Thaler, Draves, Matsumoto & Chown, 2012).
