Design of the Study
All human beings undergo three distinct development stages from birth, which are particularly important for their caretakers to understand. These stages develop approximately 18 months after birth, with mobility being the first, followed by self-awareness and finally language. Though the triggers for self-awareness are not yet understood, this is the period a child begins to understand their name. Other activities characteristic of this stage include identifying themselves in front of a mirror and has better understandings of what they like, dislike, need and wish. I will observe how toddlers behave when they are placed in front of a mirror, as well as carry out a feasibility study on their caretakers on when they began this behavior. Self-awareness plays an important role in children, especially when it comes to their processing of emotions. In other words, they will be able to recognize their fortes and flaws, understand and talk about their feelings, and finally, know how their behaviors affect others. How fast children develop their ability to speak will be studied with the information being collected. This information will be mainly collected from caretakers as they spend the most time with the toddlers as they develop.
