I am excited to learn more about the Ottoman Empire and how religion influenced the political system before the 19th century. I feel that it was more than tolerance that dictated how Muslims and non-Muslims were treated, in terms of rights and justice. I think that differences between people should not be used as a reason to treat them differently and as such, the issue of equality should not be disregarded in any political system. If it was okay for a non-Muslim to be tried in a Muslim court and not okay if tables were turned, then where is the justice in that.
I have learned from this article that political legitimacy of the empire depended highly on religion. I believe that if this was not the case, the empire would not have lasted for as long as it did, because dhimma allowed both the Muslim and non-Mus...
