A.Problem Statement
1 What is the social issue or concern under study? The research issue or concern?
The research issue addressed by the Piedra and Byun (2011) includes determining whether Vida Alegre is a cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) intervention for depressed immigrant moms living in towns with modest but quickly expanding Hispanic populations.
What is the broad research question?
The research questions seek to address whether an existing CBGT can be modified to address immigrant issues.
2 Describe how the author justifies the importance of this question to social work practice.
The study question has been justified through the study method, which seeks to investigate if being exposed to the intervention lowered depressive symptoms. The study uses a social work-based method of randomized control trial in which the subjects are randomly allocated to one of two groups: one (the experimental group) receives the intervention under study, while the other (the comparison group or control) receives a different (standard) therapy. The randomized method of pretest/posttest/follow-up design was applied in this study in which the participants were given the same evaluation measures before and after receiving therapy or being exposed to a condition, with such measurements being evaluated to see if any changes can be ascribed to the treatment or condition. The method was used to test whether participants exposed to the Vida Alegre intervention showed less depression over time (Piedra & Byoun, 2011).
Critique:
1 Does the author adequately address the importance of the particular research question broadly and to social work practice? Justify your answer.
The authors adequately address the importance of the research by providing strong statistical backgrounds regarding the elements of the study. They have provided the basis by giving the historical accounts of the growth of the Latino population in the United States, to reveal the striking reality. The statistics address the context of aging in American society in comparison to the population under study. The comparison helps in identifying the roles of the Latino population in future labor markets and the broader society. They also gave an account of services that support the wellbeing of the population of the study. The services under study include the appropriate and timely mental health treatments are among these services, especially in parts of the country where the Latino population has grown rapidly. The author also addresses the population dynamics of Latino immigrants towards the demand for service access. The study also addressed the location of the Latino in the urban areas taking into account the importance of segregation in urban centers and their surrounding metros over the past two decades and the benefits from an economic revitalization because of this demographic shift. These particular research elements were appropriate for justifying the demand for mental health services by Latino immigrants and their vulnerability to mental health problems in the work they came across in the United States (Piedra & Byoun, 2011).
The research also takes into account the educational level of the study population. On average, the study identified that most immigrants had a lower level of education as compared with the general population. This disparity was significant to determine workers in low-wage jobs without health insurance and hence cannot afford better mental health care services. The socioeconomic disparities were also taken into account to evaluate the exposure of the study population to environmental and occupational hazards and low level of service access across the life course. These attributes support the significance of these study all dynamics.
B.Literature Review
1 Describe the theoretical perspective(s) or practice theory/model, if any that guides this study. Note if there is none.
The study literature did not factor in the theoretical perspective to guide the study
2 Summarize in no more than one paragraph the substance of the literature review.
Several kinds of research have been used to examine maternal depression among Latino youths exposed to community violence. A similar study conducted in Canada found that immigrant women reported three to five times more depression symptoms and poorer levels of social support after giving birth than native-born mothers. Immigrant women, unlike their native-born counterparts, were concerned about the lack of assistance and guidance from family and friends in caring for their young children. Another study indicated that mother melancholy was exacerbated by the loss of key connections and personal time. Other studies have implied that Latino immigrants are aware of clinical depression and are able to distinguish its emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal components (Piedra & Byoun, 2011).
3 Critique.
Remember to justify your response to the following questions using evidence from the article.
1 Is the literature review based on research findings and/or practice theory? Explain.
Literature review clearly supports the research findings of these the study. For instance, the previous studies found that migrating to a new nation throws the migrant into a life change that impacts the person as well as his or her family, and can span generations. In many circumstances, there is cause for alarm; studies have linked increased levels of assimilation to harmful health habits and mental health issues
2 Is the literature review up to date? Why do you think so? Your response should take into account the year the paper was published.
The literature review is up to date with most studies conducted just within two past decades. The findings of the review address most of the social issues under investigation
3. Does the literature reviewed cover the social issue adequately? Why? If you believe something is missing, what might that be?
The previous studies referenced in the literature review adequately cover the social issue of depression. In most findings, the issues related to the acculturation process frequently motivate Latino immigrants to seek mental health care
C.Research Question and Hypotheses.
Research Questions
1 Identify the specific research questions. If there are no specific research questions specified, note that and respond NA to the critique questions.
N/A
2
Critique of research questions.
1 Do the specific research question relate directly to the broader research question addressed in 1A? Why?
N/A
2.How does the literature review inform these research questions? Does the literature review support the question by showing earlier work but then identifies gaps in knowledge and/or demonstrates the importance of the research question?
N/A
Hypotheses
1 State the authors’ hypotheses. If there are no hypotheses specified note that and respond NA to the critique questions.
Immigrant mothers’ exposure to Vida Alegre—a 10-week CBGT intervention tailored to the immigrant experience—would result in fewer depression symptoms.
Critique of hypotheses.
1 Is the hypothesis statement correctly written? Why or why not?
Yes, it identifies the key variables of the study.
2 Is a relationship between the independent and dependent variable clearly stated? What is the relationship?
The relationship is not clearly identified but can be implied as exposure to Vida Alegre and depression symptoms as the independent and dependent variables respectfully.
3 Is the hypothesis consistent with the theory and/or literature review? Explain.
There is no clear theory identified in the study. However, its in line with the literature review except that the literature review is more of disparities in mental health and depression than how it can be prevented or how it has been solved.
D.Research design.
1 What type of specific research design is used? Describe the design. Note data collection time points.
The research design by Piedra and Byoun (2011) employed a pretest/posttest/follow-up design to see if those who received the Vida Alegre intervention had decreased depression over time. The CES-D was used by the researchers to assess levels of depression-related symptoms three times in time: before the intervention (T1), after the intervention (T2), and three months afterward (T3). They also gathered demographic and focus group data to put the findings into context. At the start of the study, each participant submitted demographic information (T1). Participants were interviewed in focus groups at the conclusion of the intervention to learn more about their experiences (Piedra & Byoun, 2011).
2 How were participants assigned to groups [random assignment or some other assignment or one group?
There is no specific detail on how they were assigned to the groups
3 How were participants retained in the study? How many dropped out?
11 participants dropped out and 19 were retained.
Critique:
1 Does the author provide evidence that the groups are similar? Describe.
The participants for this study were gathered from three cities in Champaign County, Illinois: Champaign, Rantoul, and Urbana. Since 2000, Champaign County has been one of the ten Midwest counties with the fastest-growing Latino population (Fry, 2008). Between 2000 and 2009, the population of Champaign County expanded from 5,203 (3%) to 8,356 (4%), a roughly 44 percent rise in a 5- to 7-year span
2 If random assignment was not used but there are comparison groups, how did the author convince you of the comparability of the groups? Explain why or why you are not convinced.
During the same period, the participants were Spanish-speaking women aged 21 and above who were recruited through health and social service organizations in Champaign County and by word of mouth (a procedure in which one participant recommends another). Initially, the study utilized typical mental health language in recruiting materials, such as utilizing the terms depression or mental health, and found that the strategy resulted in very poor recruitment rates in December.
3 Is reactivity a problem? Why or why not?
Reactivity was not a problem since the study did not involve medical tests.
4 Are there other threats to external validity? Why or why not?
No threats were recorded from external validity except for the small sample size
5 If participants dropped out during the course of the study, were they different or similar to those who remained in the study?
A member of the research team assessed all potential participants. Thirty potential participants were assessed during the evaluations, with the Major Depressive Episode Screener used to determine if the woman was presently experiencing or had previously experienced a major depressive episode. Just over a third of the 30 women tested were eliminated because (a) they were not Spanish-language dominant, (b) they were not now sad, and (c) they did not have a history of depression as defined by the MDES. After si...
