What is the topic/research?
This research article focuses on doing an empirical investigation of the role of the growing use of social media in developing negative emotional responses, such as lower self-esteem. For this purpose, this research focused on the domain of upward comparison made on social media to evaluate its impact on users’ self-esteem. For convenience, the research narrowed down its focus to a single social media platform: Facebook.
How was it investigated/research approach?
This study used a mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology to collect and evaluate Facebook users’ responses to upward comparisons they make on this popular platform. The researchers selected a sample of 150 students studying at the Institute of Business Administration (IoB), Karachi, Pakistan. To collect relevant, the study used a dual approach involving the use of questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. The questions used in these instruments were based on the pre-selected research questions related to the impact of social media on social media on self-esteem and the means to resolve this dilemma. To make an empirical evaluation of the data collected from the participants, the researchers applied a correlation and regression model based on SPSS statistical software.
