Educators are employed to guide classroom learning and oversee various subjects' coursework. The article by Capin et al. (2020) focuses on examining vocabulary, content knowledge instruction, and reading comprehension in social studies teaching. This study purposed to improve teachers' implementation of fourth-grade content-area teaching. The study addressed research questions derived from the amount and type of content knowledge instruction teachers in elementary school provide in a social studies class and the extent to which the instructions given are consistent with known features of effective instruction. The researchers sought to observe and evaluate educator’s instructional approaches when teaching grade four social studies. In this endeavor, thirty-three instructors were sources from twelve educational institutions, and their sessions were recorded for further evaluation. Each instructor recorded three sessions, emphasizing vocabulary learning, engagement with learning materials, comprehension, as well as other vital instruction practices within the classroom. Eighty-seven lessons were recorded, and the minutes totaled 2429. Instructional components that the researchers targeted include coursework teaching, vocabulary, non-social studies time, and comprehension. Sixty-seven percent of the lessons recorded included reading comprehension instruction, and other related knowledge instructions constituted 40%. Accordingly, 25% was allocated to vocabulary instruction, and 3% was allocated to other activities that were not related to social studies. The study dedicated multiple sections to analyzing reading comprehension, vocabulary, and content-related instructions. The results from the study suggest that teachers assigned to grade 4 frequently integrate vocabulary learning and engagement with text sources into their classroom instruction. Notably, two-thirds of instructional time was spent learning vocabulary or instructing students with curriculum sources to comprehend content. It also calls for targeted professional development to enhance the implementation of evidence-based strategies.
