The article talks about why Texas hospitals have increased their security measures; assaults committed in the emergency department is on the increase. There is need for change in Texas legislation to protect emergency department personnel.

This article reports about the recent move by the Texas Governor Ricky Perry who signed legislation making it illegal to commit an assault against personnel within the emergency department. The action would be considered a third-degree felony. The legislation raises the penalty for those committing assaults against nurses at the emergency department and other workers from a Class A misdemeanor to a third-degree felony. The move was necessitated by studies that indicated the increasing incidences of workplace assaults in Texas hospital. A view supported by the emergency nurses association and Texas nurses association.
