Article Critique Instructions:
You must select an original research article from a reputable scientific Human Performance or Exercise Science related peer-reviewed journal to analyze. Parts of an original research article include the introduction, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion sections. Keep in mind that 15 points of your total grade will be allotted to how relevant your article is to Exercise Physiology. Also, clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of the research study’s design (i.e. the methodology section and the discussion section).
Using the Journal Article Review Template, compose a JAR of no less than two full pages review of the journal article in paragraph form. Bullet points will not be accepted. Also, you must submit your chosen journal article as a PDF to the instructor.

EXSC-510: ADVANCED EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY ARTICLE REVIEW
A) Background (Section 1: Reason for article choice AND Importance)
1 Reason for Selection of Article and Importance/Relationship to Exercise Physiology
In an era where precision training is increasingly guided by chronobiology, understanding how time of day influences physiological adaptations is critical. The article by Arciero et al. (2022) offers a timely investigation into how exercise time of day (ETOD) affects body composition, cardiometabolic health, and muscular performance in trained men and women. I selected this study because it directly relates to key concepts in Exercise Physiology, such as substrate metabolism, blood pressure regulation, and neuromuscular adaptation. It also addresses a critical gap in the literature on ETOD-specific responses in sex-stratified, trained populations, using a multimodal training approach highly relevant to both athletes and practitioners.
2 Introduction (from article)
The introduction highlights that sex-specific physiological responses to exercise may vary with the time of day due to circadian influences. Previous research often excluded women or focused on single-modality training, limiting generalizability. This study employs the RISE protocol, which combines resistance, interval, stretching, and endurance training with a standardized protein-based nutrition plan. The authors hypothesized that morning exercise would optimize fat loss and cardiovascular outcomes while evening training would enhance muscular strength and power.
3 Methods
1 Consider the strength and weaknesses of the research study’s design.
In the methods, a total of 56 exercise-trained adults (30 women and 26 men) participated in a 12-week randomized controlled trial, assigned to either morning (6:00–8:00 a.m.) or evening (6:30–8:30 p.m.) multimodal training sessions. Participants were healthy adults aged 25–55; those with chronic con...
