Firefighting is the attempt to prevent the spread of fire and or extinguish it. The fire can be in automobiles, buildings, forests, etc. The nature of the job is dangerous, and many firefighters have lost their lives in the process. Typically, many firefighters are men. They are considered stronger and brave. However, there is no evidence to suggest that women cannot do firefighting as well as men. However, the industry has remained predominantly male, and though more women have tried to join firefighting departments, their numbers are relatively lower. Additionally, some facets of the firefighting operations are still men-focused, and few departments have made efforts to change the system to make female firefighters comfortable in their line of work. One of these areas is the PPC (Personal Protective Clothing). This article sought to find the occupational barriers, especially on PPC, and how they can be designed to be female-friendly.

This research study is designed to highlight and address the challenges female firefighters face in their line of work. The female anatomy and male anatomy are different, and the PPCs are usually designed for the male anatomy. For example, the bust, hips, and chest. If PPCs are designed for a male body, the women find them uncomfortable. Most women are also shorter, and when they try even the smallest firefighting PPC, they find they are still oversize. The complaint that they feel that it is like 'fitting your dad's oversize coat.' Failing to provide comfortable PPC to female firefighters is also dangerous to them. Oversize clothing is more likely to catch fire, accumulate toxic fumes, and trip over rushing to carry out firefighting operations.
