Leadership Profile: Yao Ming
Your Name
Subject and Section

Rationale
Yao Ming is a well-known personality in the world of sports. His impact in the NBA forced the leaders of China to make him the spokesperson for sports and a leader to innovate the basketball programs in the country. He is currently the president of the Chinese Basketball Association, which trains the current and new generation of players that can rival the west.
Leader Biography
Yao Ming, in 2011, retired from the National Basketball Association (NBA) at the young age of 30, which is mostly the time when most players are at the peak of their game (Pu, 4). Although many fans questioned his early retirement decision, Yao Ming made a mark in international basketball that granted him a title for international fame in the sports world. He grew up to 7 feet 6 inches (2.29 meters), which attracted the eyes of millions around the world (“Yao Ming NBA Player Profile”).
Yao started his basketball career with the Chinese Junior team called the Shanghai Sharks (“Biography Yao Ming”). Eventually, he played for the senior team in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) for five years, where they claimed the championship trophy in his last season of the league (“Biography Yao Ming”). When Yao Ming was 22 years old, he the number one overall pick by the Huston Rockets in the NBA in 2002 (Lavelle, 50).
He only played with the Houston Rockets from 2002 to 2011. Throughout his career in the NBA, Yao Ming earned 8 All-star game appearances, a Rookie of the year award, and many more (“Yao Ming: Chinese basketball player”). He averages 19 points per game with 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks that makes him a consistent scorer while being a strong defensive wall (FlorCruz & Hong). Yao Ming joins the Chinese National Team from time to time to represent at international tournaments such as the FIBA World Championship and the Olympics. He even carried the infamous Olympic torch at the Forbidden City of Beijing to officially start the competition (Blinebury).
Although the fans want to see him dominate more in the NBA, he announced his early retirement because of foot and ankle injuries that forced him to undergo treatment (FlorCruz & Hong). In September 2016, he was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of fame along with Allen Iverson and Shaquille O'Neal (“2016 Hall of Fame class”).
Leadership Style
Based on Yao Ming's action inside and outside the court, he can be considered a transformational leader. A transformational leader is someone that inspires and helps the people realize the value of what they do for the organization (Moradi & Shahbazi, 453). In a way, a transformational leader recognizes the role of the environment to create innovation and move the organization towards a better future (453). His presence alone makes a humbling atmosphere as an individual needs to look up to see the upper part of his body.
One aspect of transformative leadership is to create innovation for a path of growth and prosperity for the organization by developing loyalty and passion among the members and mobilize the people to a unified mission and vision (Moradi & Shahbazi, 452). Even the communist government emphasized the ability of Yao Ming as a voice of change because of his teamwork abilities, professional work ethics, and his loyalty to the country (Pu, 4). In 2017, the following year after his induction, he bought the franchise of his former team, the Chinese Basketball Association Shanghai Sharks, and has served as its president (“Yao Ming: Chinese basketball player”). He was chosen by the committee of the CBA to lead the next generation of basketball players for international success (“Yao Ming chosen to lead”). The CBA trust the leadership of Yao Ming as he founded different programs for reform and development of Chinese Sports agencies (“Yao Ming chosen to lead”). One of his goals is to transform the traditional Chinese basketball norms into a program that rivals the NBA (Ma).
The training and other lessons that he learned while with the Huston Rockets made him realize how to raise the talent level of an individual while making the game a more profitable organization (Ma). This kind of change is not normally seen in China since most of the agencies are government-sponsored, including sports. Chinese leaders adhere to authoritarian leadership, which dictates most of the activities and actions of the people and agencies (Pierson). The innovation that Yao Ming introduced in the country may be a starting point to also change China for the better of its citizens and to the world.
Another aspect of transformational leadership is the capacity to change the culture for the improvement of the organization (Moradi & Shahbazi, 453). When Yao Ming entered the NBA, the US culture tends to value race superiority from other ethnicities where prejudice and discrimination are prevalent. Yao was a victim of prejudice but he never let racial insults demoralize and demotivate him in achieving international success. His battle with racism is a hard one since he is alone in facing anti-Chinese sentiments. When the world saw that he combats prejudice with humor, the international community was captivated by his resilience and pride. Because of his conviction, Yao Ming helped in changing the supremacist perception in the basketball league that created a favorable environment for other foreigners that dream to be an international sports superstar.
Leader’s Impact
Yao Ming is a key player in the NBA and currently the head of the CBA. The most significant impact of Yao Ming's leadership is improving the relationship between the Chinese and American nations. The prevalence of globalization unified the networks in different industries around the world. Yao Ming became one of...
