Fine, David. “Nathanael West, Raymond Chandler, and the Los Angeles Novel.” California History, vol. 68, no. 4, 1989, 169-201.
This is a journal article by a CSU Long Beach professor intended to give some historical context for what he sees as a uniquely Californian form of fiction. He explains that Los Angeles writers were often outsiders whose alienation manifested in their works, and he describes the factors that led to a mass migration into California in the early twentieth century. He then analyzes how those themes emerge in novels by Nathanael West and Raymond Chandler. This is an older source published in a regional journal, but it isn’t outdated because it contains information that’s not likely to change with time, and it’s also full of insights on how to interpret Chandler’s work.
